Training when sick... yay or nay?

I woke up this morning with a cold, sore throat, bit fatigued (not enough to stop me from doing 45 mins cardio first thing though), and the sniffles.

I'm really into my training program right now, is it ok to continue?

I've heard mixed reviews, some people believe you should let your body rest and recover, others say if you feel like going to the gym then go. And I do feel like I could go and do what needs to be done, and I really hate missing my workouts... best part of my day is at the gym.

    Any thoughts?

wont hurt to take afew days off till you feel better. saying that, if i feel alittle off, i still usually train. if your training hard whilst your ill, your body wont recover properly from training, and chances are it will take you longer to get better

listen to your body, if you feel you can do a decent workout then do it, if not then take the rest

i heard a rule of thumb awhile ago

if the cold is in your head then your good to train
if the cold moves down to your chest and gets deeper then some time off is needed

speaking of which it is allergy season for me, so every morning i have the sinus/headache/cough/watery eyes....kinda sucks

screw the thumb rule, when u get a cold or anything its a NAY coz the bacteria/virus could travel with the blood to the heart and cause perikardit/myokardit, that means inflammation in ur heart and can be fatal

sounds weird, logically it should take longer time to heal, coz now ur body will have 2 things to deal with instead of just focusing all ur energy on the sickness it will deal with that AND ur muscles..

Hm.. all very good points. Thanks guys. I think if I was more sick than I am, then yes I would stay home, but I feel fine other than a few minor ailments. But it's good to know what some consequences are if you are more sick and still training. I know some people who never miss the gym, even if they are sick as a dog.. that definitely can't be healthy. Perhaps it should be on a case by case basis?

i agree with the case by case basis...

each person has to judge for themselves whether they are up to lifting...its not good to lift when ur geniunely sick, but i know a bunch of ppl who have no problem skipping days with the excuse that they feel "under the weather"

gotta make the call for yourself
