    Tommy Guns.. assorted questions

is it necessary to tuck your chin into your chest or could you do them with your head staring straight forward?

What is the best way to do barbell shrugs (with a straight bar)?

I try to keep my chin tucked in so that my spine is in correct alignment. Keep facing straight, but pull your chin in, not down.

i agree, i do the same

i have found that using an ez bar with the inner most grip with your chin tucked works my traps great. the only downfall is the amount of weight you can use because the ez bar ends are short...i throw hundred lb plates on the end to reduce the amount of bar space being used

    Do doctors ever prescribe HGH?

Do doctors ever prescribe HGH for patients who just had surgery to help heal the tendons, ligaments, or muscle they had repaired?

If they do, how long do they prescribe it for and does you insurance cover it?

I'm 26 years old. I had surgery on May 9 to repair a completely torn pec. I'm in physical therapy right now. I heard HGH can speed up healing but would only use it under my doctors care. I would NEVER buy it black market.

So you're saying I should call my insurance company (Empire Blue), tell them my situation, and ask if they would cover it if my doctor prescribed it?

What would be great is if I called them, I tell them my situation, they say they would cover it, and than I go into my doctor and he agrees to start prescribing it to me. I know that will never happen though.

Insurance companies rarely cover HGH because of the cost. I highly doubt they'd cover it to expedite a 26 year old's healing process of his torn pec, but it's worth a shot. Getting it prescribed is another thing, though, it's much easier, but the cost is just very high.

    NO-Xplode to help healing?

I asked this questionon the injuries board but figured you guys could probably help me as well.

In Aug. I will have completed my PT and will be returning to lifting after my torn pec surgery in May. I was wondering would a product like NO-Xplode be good to take when I go back to lifting? The reason I ask this is becuase I know NO-Xplode increases blood flow and wouldn't increased blood flow to my repaired muscle/tendon help heal it and strengthen it?

    Any thoughts on this?

you know what, I'm beginning to think that NO-Xplode may be counter-productive. I think it makes you FEEL like you can work out longer and harder, but you actually end up overtraining. Maybe if you keep it in check, though.

sorry doc, but i beg to differ on this one.. it may not do anything to actually help healing (atleast its not formulated to do so), no hurt in trying, but ive used it after cycles & off cycles & i have felt pumps & gains & saw great results w/ it.. for me it works great a far as energy, pumps, mental focus & saw some good quality gaining & vascularity..

but in any case, u r right about some of those products, they do absolutly nothing.. but i stand behind no-explode..JMO

    When doing dumbell side bends...

do you do them going all the way to the side and than returning all the way to the other side like:

    http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/...BSideBend.html

Or do you go all the way to the side and than return to the upright position like:

    http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exer...bell+Side+Bend

What is the correct way to do these? What way is better for building the obliques?

    Neither.

I think the best way to overload the obliques is tru indirect work from squats; deads.. and over-head pressing movements.

Unless for a sport specific reason, i wouldn't do direct oblique training either..personally

Of the two links you posted, the second looks more functional

I've done both but wasn't impressed eitherway.

i think side bends can be great to develop your obliques, just get a good stretch and contraction of that muscle.

dont use heavy weight though, that can kill your lower back.

like said above you can get a good waist workout with deadlifts, rows etc.... if anything is lagging though, hit them directly by all means, and of course.

DIET is more important than anything else

Anyone ever do seated dumbell upright rows?

Anyone ever do seated dumbell upright rows? I used to do them 3 sets reps of 10,8,6 (increasing weight each set) and got a killer burn in my lateral delts.

Anybody ever include these in their program and got good results in their lateral delts?

This is a good exercise for the upper traps...

Seated dumbell shrugs. I used to do these 3 sets, reps of 14,12,10 (increasing the weight each set). I got good results in my upper traps from these.

I read in an interview with him, that this is Jay Cutler's favorite exercise for the upper traps.

Is it necessary to tuck your chin when doing shrugs?

I posted this on the workout forum but didn't know if it would be more appropriate here.

When doing any kind of shrugs (whether it be barbell or dumbbell) is it necessary to tuck your chin?

I always hear you should tuck your chin. But does it really matter?
