i have read a lot of articles advocating and condemning this practice.
I guess dreagging is more of a powerlifter style, rather than a bodybuilder's style.

I voted yes, and yes I am a powerlifter. Although when doing some lighter weight for reps and/or speed work I sometimes get away with keeping the bar off of my shins.
how do you keep your shins from bleeding liek theres no tomorrow?Originally Posted by boondockSAINT

o you know of any lace that sells the deadlifting socks?
i think your doing something wrong if your dragging it across your shins so hard that their bleeding. I occasionally get bruises from doing this but i don't rip my skin all to shit.
When u are deadlifting heavy weight it will occasionally hit or drag across your shins causing them to bleed.. It's not an everytime occurance though.

Never dragged against my shins at all. It gets close of course but I dont let it happen.
Sometimes happens mostly close to shins just barely touching. One time i DL with the BB far from the shins... Messed up my shoulder and learned to never do it again that way
i dont even notice...so i guess it dosent

for taller guys it is a lot harder to avoid hitting your shins
i have scars all over my shins from deadlifting, its hard to avoid when youre looking up
it doesnt have to drag to make it bleed. all i have to do to make my shins bleed is touch the bar to them on the way down and snap, i've got blood running down my leg. Usually the case is just opening up a scab that was already there.
as far as socks...i doubt it...you could get some shin pads used for soccer, but you might look a little silly lol![]()
i hit my shins alot.......trying to fix my form so i'm hitting them more.......my form was really really shitty a couple weeks ago
When i started powerlifting the first thing my trainer pulled me for was lifting with the bar to far from shins . The best things is touch your shins to the bar and do small jump over knees and yes i have scars up my shins and they bleed every deadlift session but wearing knee high socks helps
Well this all depends what ur doing deads for I think...The farter the bar gets away from you the more your traps are gonna get hit, the closer it gets the more the middle and lower back gets hit...So it depends what your trying to do...Secondly, the amount of leg use you have also determines what your doing as well, so it all depends...IMO
has happened before but I make an effort to use controlled movements away from my shins
I've never dragged against my shins intentionally.
I've seen people wear high socks, soccer shin pads, and a piece of duck tape going down there shins. My shins just get scraped up, no big deal.
My problem is how far does the bar go out. I keep it barely not touching my shins, but sometimes it'll touch, not a big scrape-no big deal- but i'm trying to thickin up my traps and when i go to far i f*ck up my shoulder.
How far out do ya'll go? 4, 6 inches?
NO! You'll get hurt doing that. Deadlifts are not a trap isolation exercise. Going heavy will help, buy keep the shrugs in there.Originally Posted by Jakspro

no i dont.
I don't agree that bar close uses middle and lower back and out wide hits your traps . Deadlifts are not isolation movements , if you lift with correct form you use almost all major muscles , the further the bar is away from your shins the more strain you place on your spine .
Sometimes it hits my chins but not hard enough to hurt but does take some skin at times![]()
Sure doesnt..dont really notice. I might cap my knee on the way down sometimes tho..
I noticed that today when i was doing deads, on lighter weights i had no problem. But on the last set it rubbed. But i had long sweats on so it didn't hurt but i was concious of my move moments and noticed the rub on the last set
I never notice it hitting. Don't know if it does or doesn't.

yep
my shins have always got cuts on them
there are just dark lines on my shins and some scabs ... only on my right shin though (the side with the overhand grip) and sometimes i may bruise my knee
I'm concious to make sure the bar IS against my shins on heavier deads. I'm just scared of hurting my back. If the bar wanders away from my body I feel alot of strain in my spine and not in the muscle.
bump for more replies, opinions
It's supposed to lightly drag across your shins, it's plain physics really. The heavier you go, the more in line you want the weight w/ the axis of the body to avoid injury
the bar does hit my shins on occasion, my biggest problem is with lowering the weight down. a lot of the time it ends up hitting right above one my knees, i belive it is bc im trying to keep the bar as close to my body to avoid rounding off my back
it must come down to body shape as i have never heard of this,i lift controlled and precise every lift and the bar goes where i want it to,and some wair shin pads wtf?
I usually used a piece of duct tape or athletic tape on my shins if the rubbing gave me a problem, but over time you can pretty much build tough skin on your shins and the problem is aleviated.
I hit just above my left knee twice in a row last week. I won't be doing that anymore.
Tape, baby oil, neoprene sleeves, long socks are all good options if you are a pussy like me when it comes to shin rubbing
If you pull conventional it is a big benefit to have it close to maximize leverage and less back injury occurance.
I'm also a powerlifter/strongman and I scrape the hell out of my shins everytime I deadlift heavy. But it's no big deal because I'm used to it.
