Most accurate from what iv read is Underwater testing. (its expensive not excessible every where)
If your looking for a half/decent reading use calipers.

bioelectrical impedence is another form of testing, and it is pretty accurate if done right.
I have to disagree with the Bioimpedence testing as there are too many varables involved. For example if you have consumed a little more or less sodium than on pervious tests your results could be skewed significantly. On a BI test I come out at 28% where as calipers I am nearer 10%.
As BI testing is invertly related to hydration levels being consistent, I wouldnt recommend them
i agree. with a decent set of calipers and accurate measurements, which simply require following the diagrams of where to measure, they are usually accurate within +/- 1%. my set are supposed to be accurate within .5%, but i think 1% is a better estimate all things considered.Originally Posted by Bigun
the bio-impedance is worthless. used two different kinds and neither were even remotely accurate for anyone i used them on when comparing to caliper results. plus, i got different results every day when using them. there was one day where it gave me a reading of 14%, then the next day it told me i was at 18%. 4% in a day isn't even physically possible, not to mention that with my bf calipers i was reading at 11% at the time. to be honest, i'm not sure why they haven't been taken off the market yet.
They have their uses but I would not advocate them as an accurate testing tool. In their use for women where there are some legal issues with taking measurements on the chest and lower abdominal regions so as a sports scientist they do have some limited uses if we are testing females. However the results can be easy skewed again especially by the menstrual cycle
The hydrostatic body fat measurement is the most accurate....There is one across from my office in the human performance lab i work in... It costs faculty and students 5 dollars but its 80 for the public. Pretty interesting machine
