hopefully you can find a machine that has the same movement as a squat this will help you keep your back in place assuming that the machine has a back rest. I know my gym has one so look for one.

    There is no such machine.

You can try using the smith but it is still awkard since the bar doesn't move "naturally." Have you try squatting with no weight to learn the movement ? Ask someone as the gym to show you.

Im in the same boat as you.
if you have a bad back you have a bad back and learning to squat right wont help.

leg presses , leg curls, and leg extensions..
I do a lot of heavy leg presses and move my feet around,
    4 sets normal position
4 sets toes pointed in or out
    4 sets wide stance
    4 sets close

    5 sets of curls
    8 sets ext. pyramid

there is no sub for squats so i feel i really need to beat my legs up even more. my legs are growning but not like if there was squats in the mix.

I know how you feel. I ruptured my L5 & L 6 and they're f**ked for life. Your best bet is to learn how to squat with excellent form with light weights and as you get your form in check simply move up the weight. I limit myself to 225lbs when doing squats. You don't really need heavy weight to develop your legs using squats, it is mostly from form. I also superset my squats with sissy squats to failure, so even if your using light weights your legs will be in flames after those sissy squats.

I'm also gonna guess it's a lower back injury, so you might want to focus on those muscles as well. I found supermans worked really well in strengthing up my back. As it gets stronger try doing some hyperextensions, just don't go nuts and listen to your body.

    ***EDIT***
Don't use a belt when squatting or at all for that matter as it'll just be a crutch to your back injury and won't do much for trying to strengthen the muscles that need it when you're doing these excercises. The muscles in your back will be free to develop and help compensate for the injury.
