    Outer Sweep

I know with a close stance on any leg exercise will focus more on the outer sweep, but I am able to handle less weight than if I was to put my legs in a shoulder width stance. Should I go ahead and do the close stance to improve my outer sweep on my quads anyway?

Definitely close stance will develop the outer sweep of legs....As you know...this is a crucial focal point for competition. try wrapping your knees...especially if you are dealing with heavy weight....will increase weight load plus take alot of pressure off of your knees. Remember, although weight will directly correlate to mass gains, it's not all about how much you can put up. It's all about technique. Don't ever let ego get in the way of training correctly.
