    Talkin to my Professor

    Ok as you all know, (if you read previous posts), I am just recovering from back surgery. Now in my GXT (graded exercise tests) class my professor, who is very well known in the field of exercise physiology, actually he is one of the best, Dr. Manning is his name, explained to me that since I had back surgery, for the next few YEARS I should only do one set per muscle group to failure. He explained that this will increase muscle mass because I am doing it to failure. I am not a pro athlete, I am not a body builder, im just a guy from north jersey where its almost a requirement to be big lol, not to mention the fact that I am obsessed with having a good body. Some of the vets or people knowledgeable in the field please give me some advice as to whether or not 1 set to max will increase my muscle mass along with my AAS. I do not want to be doing my AAS while only doing 1 set and have it be worthless. Thanks guys.

    I presume he means after you have done a couple of warm up sets ? If so then yes this is a valid way of working out. I have a friend who weighs 260 lbs at 9% BF who works out just like this. But trust me, the failure set is gut wrenching in his his case. It probably isnt for everyone but its is definitely a valid option

    i did the dogcrapp workout which is very similiar to what you are wanting to do. and while on cycle had some of my best gains ever.. i still include it in my workout cycles every now and again.. give it a try.. and for details about this style of training do a lil search in the workout section.. good luck man it def, ain't over for ya.

    Thanks for the input guys, he did not mention anything about warmup sets, how many and at what percent of my 1rm?

    type dogcrapp in the "search" it will give you a detailed version of what i'm talking about.. something you should really look into

    Do two warmup sets but I would do high reps like 20 to 25 at a weight that you can get there with. You want to feel a pump at the end of it so make it real

    Yes Dogcrapp is excellent but cannot be maintained for long periods of time. Its murder on the CNS

    sounds good, well if dogcrap cant be maintained for long periods, what should i do with this 1 set way of life for me for a while?

    very true!! that;s why i only incorporate into my workout cycle every now and again..

    doggcrapp is good, I have personally always trained to failure on all my sets. Although I don't follow doggcrapp exactly anymore, I refer doing just three straight sets to failure, although I do cycle my sets/reps. I've made my best gains this way. The way to avoid CNS overload is every 4 weeks, so the 5th week itself take a week completely off from all kinds of training and get lots of sleep.

    4 weeks is good because you don't let yourself get to far in the overtraining hole where a one week layoff can bring you out of it.
