I say stay cool and you can work out harder and longer. People sometimes confuse sweating with burning calories which is not the case.

You burn more calories when you're cooler.

^^^really, how so, I figured youd burn more to keep cool hence having the fan off would help (not by much) burn maybe a few??
Crazyness.

Kinda like hypothermia, just not to the crazy extent of it. It makes your body shiver/shake real fast, its burning calories to try and keep you warm...and from dieing. The keeping hott thing just makes you sweat and lose water weight.

Doesnt things like clen raise your body temp and in turn burn more calories?

If you're keeping yourself cool with a fan (or not wearing a sweatshirt for insulation) your body has to work harder to keep itself warm, in addition to the cardio energy expended.
Think of your body as a furnace with the thermostat set to 98.8 degrees... if its cold out, you need more fuel to keep your furnace going, aka more calories get burned. If its warm out, you don't need as much to keep your furnace warm.
The reason people think they're losing fat or burning calories faster when they're sweating a lot is because theyre losing water weight... which just comes back right away.Last edited by AandF6969; 05-09-2007 at 03:20 AM.

bingo, sweat means water weight......
people always say that you need to sweat to lose fat, but actually people are confused ....sweat Is just the water your pores release to keep your body cool .......but you are loosing water weight while you do it......that's how a lot of fighters cut weight!!
sweat while doing a excersise is just the bodys way of tring to keep your brain from frying ...... but its a sign that your pushing your self hard to the point that your body has to cool it self down.....I guess people confuse it from being a sign of pushing yourself to what many think it is " sweating the fat out"...
I'm old fashion I feel like I got a good work out when I build a sweat.....but either way sweat or no sweat a calorie burned is a calorie burned.........

but........ a increase in ambient temp can cause a elevation in heart rate......so that can lead in a increase in calorie output.....sooooo....its kinda like a double sided thing.....
I just go by my heart rate when I do cardio.....I try to keep it in the 60 to 70% of my max heart rate.......for 45 min
when I do HIT cardio I do 85% to 90% bursts of 60 seconds to 1 min and 30sec then bring it down to 60% for 4 min.....I just repeat for 25min

yea play it safe when it comes to not sweating though because it could lead to heat stroke and various other serious conditions

Sweating does not dictate how many calories you burn. It is nothing more than your bodies response to lower its temperature and maintaining homeostasis. You will initially lose weight by sweating more, but this nothing more than water weight from your body dehydrating itself in the effort of keeping cool. You will probably get this weight back while hydrating during or after your exercise.
This is what happens, first vasodilation takes place in your skin to allow the heat to conduct through the blood to your skin and then into the environment around your body. If that isn't enough your body kicks over to sweating, relying on the evaporation of your sweat to carry the heat with it.
If you're doing 2 hours of cardio with a fan on, there is a good chance vasodilation is taking care of the body heat since the air is constantly pulling it off your body, likewise you may be sweating a great deal but the fan is actually causing the sweat to evaporate fast enough that it isn't accumulating.
Just do what makes you feel the most comfortable during your exercise and allows you to stay plentifully hydrated!

Also, your body doesn't need to burn energy to keep warm during exercise, more likely than not your body will attempt to keep its temperature from going UP!
Unless you're jogging through the tundra or some shit.

I'd say leave the fan on. When I was boxing the trainer would always have the heat cranked in the summer. It had nothing to do with burning calories or cardio. He was just prepping us for the worst case senario in a fight I suppose. Getting heat stroke will not help with cardio!

One of the 24H gyms I go to has cardio in a smaller low ceiling room separated from the weight room and every time they have the fan on it blows all the stench from people that don't use deodorant all over the room. The bad thing is because the fan oscillates it blows a lethal dose of foul smell every couple of seconds in your direction but the ultimate worst is when sometimes you take a couple of deep breaths and inhale the wave of funk through your mouth and nose. There are other 24H Fitness gyms close by but the cardio areas are always packed.

Yes friends you are right
Yes friends you are right & If this were the case, every fat guy who ever drenched a chair by falling asleep in it would be well on his way to a lean physique. Saunas, heat pads, and long jogs under sweat clothes are all effective for helping you lose weight temporarily, but it's only water, and you'll replace it as soon as you drink fluids again. The only way to burn a lot of calories is through activity, which, ***ending on the weather, your clothing, and your body's unique thermoregulators, doesn't have to mean heavy sweating. In fact, you could run a mile without working up a significant sweat at all and still burn hundreds of calories.
