Deadlifts Hyperventolate
Anymore, when I do a set of deads, once I am finished, about 15 seconds after I set the weight down, I have shortness of breath. I try to catch my breath, but it seems like I cannot get enough air in and I will start freak out thinking that I can't breath. This will go on for about 2 minutes, then I settle down. I don't push real hard with deads because of this. I don't do a whole lot of weight and my reps for deads are no more than 8. What could be causing this?

8 reps for deads is a lot, i always get out of breath from deads and squats but not to the extent of what your saying. maybe try upping the weight and lowering reps?

you might want to check your breathing....this is an easy exercise to hold your breath a little.
with the shit heavy weight, you probably dont want to pause at the bottom.....But personally, anything over 4 reps for me, I pause at the bottom, breath, and explode, repeat..
Most of the time, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, headache, redness in the face, whatever, most of the time, a proper breathing technique will eleveiate these symptoms
what happens is, for the first half of the positive, people tend to hold their breath. This puts tremendous amounts of pressure inside your body.....start exhaling at the very beginning of the positive, AND MAKE SURE YOU BREATH AT THE TOP....Or do like i do for long sets, pause in between each rep on the bottom
I am not saying YOU SHOULD pause between each rep, just somthing to think about.....some people probably dont like doing that....thats one way i have solved the problemLast edited by IronReload04; 05-11-2007 at 03:46 PM.

Yea I agree with Iron, probably something with your breathing.
Personally, I pause at the top for a brief second and take in a deep breath and I take in another fast breath as I put the weight down, I slowly exhale on the way up and on the way down. Always try to breath ahead of the lift to allow for the gas exchange to occur in your lungs and then have that oxygen delivered to your muscle cells... Some people don't really agree with hyperventilation before a set but for deads and squats I always take in three steady and deep breaths before the start of my set.
Everyone varies in their form but I'm a fan of having great form and moving in fluid/steady motion for my deads. That fast jerking shit is something I stray from when I lift weight that heavy. Lastly, take your time in between sets and allow your body to recover from it's oxygen deficit!
