thing is, with any machine, its going to be easier because you arent having to use any stability muscles.
true but i am training for some mass on my shoulders and i train on my own
Dumbbells don't really require a spotter for me... if I can't complete a rep due to muscle failure you can pretty easily lower the dumbbell. I say lower and not drop because I seriously can't stand the chimp-fvcks that throw dumbbells.
max2extreme is right and so are you, smith feels easier because it is. It requires much more effort to hold a controlled movement of the dumbbell with a single arm and total free range of motion than it does to pivot your body against a bench and just push the controlled barbell of a smith machine, straight above your head. Dumbbells for life! :P
I put on the most mass when I was doing barbell presses (not on smith). I really like them. And if your gym has a rack that you can adjust the side bars, then, as long as you aren't new to doing them, you can do them without a spotter because when you are done, you can lower them down to rest on the side bars. Front raises really make your shoulders look big too, at least for me, so I would recommend hitting them pretty hard too. Good luck.
so,smith machine front press?
yes its good, take less time inbetween sets and do drop sets on there but dont only rely on the smith machine you need to rotate exercises or you wont grow like you would if you had the varietyOriginally Posted by kwakisaki
take what you like doing best, 6 months from now, be able to use 20 more pounds, and your shoulders will be thicker.......Its that simple, and this is my frame of mind
somthing to be noted, Whenever i watch people workout, smith or barbell gives most people a greater range of motion than dumbells
I dont like smith machine front press too much. Id rather do BB front press on a rack, if not that, then I like DB press, and 3rd in my rank would be smith machine front press.
IronReload, you really think you get more range of motion with smith/bb than with DB?? I guess it ***ends on what you mean... Yea you can go down lower on a smith machine, but if thats the case, then the person is probably going down lower than he needs to.
next time your in the gym, watch somone else do db mil press......Watch how when they go down, the dumbells hit their shoulders, and thats as far down as they go, this leaves their hands over their chin......With barbell or smith, you know your going under your chin
I believe in going just under the chin.....so this is where i am coming from

This is why i think the whole "dumbells greater range of motion"thing is a huge misconception
again, its not a super huge deal, just pick your favorite exercise, and bury it for more reps or more weight than last time.....
imo, as long as your not doing just one exercsise, your fine, press the damn weight over your head and grow baby grow
lol, one more post
I think this is why i can do more net weight with dumbells than barbells, the range of motion is greater with barbell/smith when going under chin compared to dumbells where you literally can only go so far because of the dumbell gets in the way
