In my experience, it goes away about twice as fast as you gain it. No scientific proof but...JMO. However muscular atrophy will eventually take place if you don't use the muscle. Atrophy occurs from a lack of physical exercise. Persons who have decreased activity levels can lose muscle tone and develop atrophy.

Right, thanks....However, how long does it take before you notice it? 2 weeks? 3 weeks?

strength loss isnt always muscle loss.......nuerological factors are involved......

muscle loss most likely will start to happen at some point between weeks 2 and 3, but closer to 3 weeks....

their will be absolutely no muscle mass lost going one week without lifting

somebody said you lose muscle twice as fast as you gain.......this is wrong
when you lose muscle, you gain it back much more rapidly than you originally got it

yup, wouldnt worry to much about the strength loss.........

here is an example of what i mean by neurological factors

lets say you have a productive week in school........you dont touch a pen from thursday morning, until monday afternoon........its going to feel all wierd and awkward to starting writing again.........Did your muscles in your hands and forearms shrink????? absolutely not, you just lost some nuerological ability over the 4 days.......the muscles dont go anywhere......by tuesday, writing feels as smooth and easy......same principle guys

same here......every 8-9 weeks, i take about 10 or so days off

what we have found over at dc is, that for us, we can only put muscle mass on for so long, until the body refuses to put on anymore........the only way to hurdle over this, is time off or a detraining phase

agreed. you will lose some size and strength, but ti is easy to get back, juat dont take off 9months out of every year. make sure the time off is taken when neeeded, like now when you are injured

My high school wrestling coach always told us you start to loose your conditioning after 72 hours of inactivity. Personally I feel like shit if I take 48 hours off. Furthermore, you are highly likely to not diet hard if you are not training hard.

LOL thats so inaccurate its tragic.
it can take up to 12 or even 14 days for a muscle to fully heal and repair depending upon the tissue trauma induced via training...
otherwise if that was true you'd be doing a upper lower body split and lifting every day just to see any gains at all.

no i see what he means. And i agree

If i take a month or so off the gym, you can pretty much bet I wont eat the same amount of food as I would whilst training 4-5 times a week. Still try and keep it clean, but definately not 4000cals ED

in all honesty i start to flatten out a little if i havent trained in 3 days..then i maintain that size for around 2 weeks, slowly starting to shrink..after a month, i lost considerable size..after 2 months, which is where im sitting at right now, im down to my base size, i dont get any smaller than this..which is kind of weird, my arms used to be 13.5 inches, when i started, but now, i dont think i could get them under 16 if i tried..right now they are probably upper 18's, but i havent done so much as a pushup in 2 months. the beauty is it comes back as fast as it goes. in a month or 2 of training i would be as big as i am in my avatar(that pic was taken around 10 weeks back in the gym after over a year and a 1/2 out)
being out of the gym ****in blows...i cant stand it..but theres definate sollice in knowing how easily and fast it comes back..one workout and you can see a difference

I once took a 6 month break from lifting. Didn't lose much mass but lost a LOT of strength. I guess that everyone is different.

my friend stopped working out for a good month or two and lost hardly any size at all, he still kept his diet clean though, you can maintain mass as long as you provide the calories, you just won't grow, so don't fret johhny-too-small i'm sure you will keep dieting

I took 5 months off of lifting, only ate maybe 2500 calories a day. I dropped from 265 down to 235. The best gains in my life came after this break. 3 months training clean, followed by 3 months on cycle, now i am at 284lbs. Although the first week back in the gym I could hardly push up the 65lb dumbells on incline bench.

When I was younger I noticed if I don't take a week off after three weeks I get sickly. Now for some reason I can go much longer and when I do take off its only for like 5-6 days.before I start mu bulk tho, ill probably try to shoot for 2 weeks off.oh and if I do get sick (maybe twice a year, I take that whole week or even a month off.
