you will find a lot of powerlifters using this technique... and actually practice to improve their arch. it shortens the range of motion which can increase your press.

cool, but now is it good to arch your back if your lifting for size and not worrying to much about strength?

anyone know the advantages and disadvantages?

I read that you want no more than a fist (thin way, palm down) (so imagine a fist in the small of your lower back) space in between your back and the bench. Otherwise your not doing it right and you could risk hurting yourself.

Of couse, if you are a powerlifter or anything else that is a different story.

An extreme powerlifters arch turns the exercise into a decline press type movement. You will shift more stress to the inferior-sternal pec fibers. You would be better off doing decline presses, if that is your goal. Using a more natural arch will shift more stress to the medial-sternal pec fibers.
