    Strong DB but weak BB...WTF...

    Hey guys/gals, Im 6'3, 240lbs

Since I started training 2 years ago seriously, up till this point I primarily used dumbbells for chest and not to much the barbell.

I now think I am suffering because of it. It's funny that I can press 140lbs dumbells for 10 good reps but I struggle to push up 315 on the barbell 1 time...........What the fack?

Today I decided against DB's FOR A WHILE. At least until I get my barbell weight up because this is unacceptable.

I can squat 425 7x and dead around 535 4x but I can't bench press worth of crap.

I need some serious guidence here.

Looks to me a case related to muscle memory... Basically, you have maxed out on the exercises your body has become accustomed to lifting heavy on. Since you rarely touch barbells, its a total shock and deviation for your system so your body has not adapted... You are correct in your decision to drop the dbs.. given your overall strength development, focusing on bb presses will help bring them up to speed relatively quickly, I'd say anywhere from 6-12 weeks... so nothing to worry about...in fact, it's a good way to create some extra growth boost

I had the opposite problem...I was so hooked on bbs that my dbs were embarrassing... now they're on par ever since I started giving equal attention to both.

I'm curious as to how long it took you to bring your DB'S up when you started giving them your full attention.

Also as for chest development, some say the db's are superior to bb but I think that depends on the person/genetics correct.

Once your neural pathways adjust to barbell presses the weights will increase at a rapid rate. There is not such thing as db's being superior to bb's or vise versa.

I was leaning toward an explanation like this as well. Today I almost wanted to quit but **** that! Im going to press on with BB and hopefully see a new chest being i never focused on it before.

Slingshot, thank you for the insight brotha! I can't wait until the adaptation begins.
