I hate those gimps who wear them when they walk in the gym until they leave. I reckon they do it to make their fat waists look smaller.

I know a pair of guys who wear their belts, gloves, sweat bands,(on wrists and heads) parachute pants, the whole time in the gym. They grunt and bang weights trying to get all the attention they can, high fives, it is like a bad Sat night live sketch. Especially since they can't move any serious weight, even with horrible form.

I keep looking for the hidden cameras.

Back on point I use a belt sparingly only on my very heaviest sets.

I voted for during heavy leg/back work but in actuality I only use a belt during my leg workout and only during leg press or if my back is severely over worked..usually last workout before some time off.. simply because leg press puts an extraordinary amount of pressure on my back

Belts are a false sense of security.

I previously voted never on this. However, on Saturday I used a belt for my heavy set of deads as my lower back was aching. Will prolly use it again for heavy deads and maybe squats.

Understandable when you're going heavy on deads, but by using a belt you don't allow those small supporting muscle groups to grow as the rest of your body grows from those heavy compound movements...As a result, you could actually be putting yourself at risk of injury by using a belt rather than preventing it...

Going from what I read. I use a belt for deads, squats, and when I am doing some type of power clean, or clean and jerk with heavy weight.

What I read: Using a belt for those types of moves actually increases (helps build) muscle. b/c when used properly a belt helps you keep your form correct and not round your back to much. Makes sense to me, b/c when I am doing 1rm or close to it, all I want to do is get that weight up, and I could easily let my form slack a little, but with the belt its almost like reminds me to hold it tight.

I always use one on max effort squat, bench, and deadlifts. If the back is feeling overtrained I tend to put a belt on early.

I've been lifting since 1979. Back then everyone wore a belt. I still do. I notice that the young guys don't wear belts. I guess I wear one do to habit. I have went to the gym and left it at home but it always feels odd not to wear it. I only tighten it up when doing heavy benches, rows, overhead presses, squats and leg presses. At my gym and others I visit I do notice that most of the more advance guys wear them and I've been to alot of gyms in my day.

I use on heavy squats only and because of 2 blown discs in my lower back. Belts may be a false sense of security, but sometimes that's all you need to get the big weight up.
