    short vs. long

    which is better for cardio?

    Short and fast (guerilla training)

Long and low intensity training (treadmill for 30 minutes etc etc)

I want to know because I am trying to lose weight as fast as i can and obviously i want it to be gone for good

If you have a high BF then long and less intense cardio sessions are good. Pre breakfast cardio gives the best fat burning but you may lose a little muscle too.

If you are lean the body will burn fat stores a lot easier so at 12% high intensity cardio is fine. It is healthy for your heart and increases stamina which helps in gruelling workouts. I like sparring (boxing) and running for high intensity stuff.

do you have a workout routine? IMO i think the best way to lose fat is to do cardio after a good, hard weight session. All your glycogen stores are depleted from the weight session, so if you hop on an elliptical or treadmill and keep your heartrate in a certain zone for 30 minutes you will see drastic change, but your diet has to be in check of course.

also a good way of being catabolic during the critical PWO window, Not good IMO.

agreed, which is why you have to determine what is more important, getting your PWO shake in right after you train weights, or waiting a half hour and doing cardio to burn fat, i feel the window will close from 30 minutes to an hour after weight sessions so i feel i am safe doing 30 mins cardio after weights

^ i owuld say a very bad idea still. the last thing the body wants after heavy lifting is more work of any kind. if you want to grow then split cardio from weights.

My problem with cardio is my time restraints. This isn't ideal but the only time I can really do it is BEFORE a weight session unless I was to ditch my training partners. Still tend to have good sessions but obviously I lift a lot better when I don't do the cardio. My question is how serious is the negative impact of this?

Doing cardio directly before weights session is an awful thing to do. Better off doing no cardio if thats all you can manage. You are burning precious glycogen stores with cardio which will mean fat loss is at a minimum. You will then commence a weight session with depleted glyogen stores which will force your body to tear down muscle tissue. You could drink a pro/dex shake after your cardio then commence weights but really not ideal. I work 2 jobs and support a family. Make time.

Yes mein furher :-D In all seriousness though thanks. A few years ago I did a 14 week stint of dieting down with cardio before my weights session - I browsed around the magazines (didn't have the net back then) looking for what the negatives would be and the best I could find was that "it wasn't ideal". Things went ok but I know they could have been a hell of a lot better. I'll take a look at how I can re-arrange things and if worst came to worst I'd go for the shake option - I could do 45 mins back end of each of my weekend workouts for definite then it's a case of slotting in another 1 or 2 through the week.

Ps - dunno if that was your column that used to appear in MD but it was always a good, informative read.

I like to do cardio long and low/mid intensity after lifting as well. Then PWO shake/food right after. It has worked well for me. How would the PWO before cardio affect things?
