treadmill or bike, which is better...?

OK so my stationary bike packed it in and I'm thinking about getting it fixed and/or perhaps add a treadmill to my personal gym. Which is better for cardio and fat burning: a stationary bike or a good paced walk on the treadmill?

Cheers all in advance for sharing your experiences

doesnt matter i alternate makes the time go faster but honestly i feel more out of a bike cuz i can turn the resistance up and burn more without increasing my RPM or pace....so thats what i prefer

    - Doesn't matter as long as you stay within your required heart rate and have your diet down.

I'm pretty sure that at the same heart rate the treadmill burns more calories then the bike...

Me too. From a scientific standpoint it makes sense that if you have your heart rate at the target rate it shouldn't matter what cardio activity you're doing BUT from a personal standpoint I always sweat more and feel like I'm getting a better workout while on the treadmill or elliptical even though my heart rate is the same...weird, I know. So, do whatever keeps your heart rate up and satisfys you! Switch it up here and there so you don't get bored.

Probably right. I like to switch it up between the bike, treadmill and elliptical personally.

I'm more of a treadmill over the bike. I seem to get a bigger sweat going which always makes me feel good.

But like the one guy above said... as long as you're getting your heart rate up!

I've burned more fat than ever since i started walking on a 15% incline for an hour straight. I burn over 600 calories and all i do is walk and watch tv.

The pass passes much slower on a bike to me and I don't want the quad burn that the bike can give me when i am just looking to burn fat.

I use an incline treadmill for variety...but my primary cardio is the stationary bike.

Prior to that I had a stairmaster obsession.

Truthfully however, I haven't found a 'good' stairmaster since that time.

Most are angled incorrectly... Or use a chain/gear set-up that's more like pedalling upright than stair climbing.

    Bleh.

Anyway.. back to the discussion: 'better' is the one you can do constantly and consistently.

I like the bike because it utilizes a lot more musculature tru a greater range of motion.

A high incline treadmill involves more of the posterior musculature... but still, the degree of knee-bending isn't as significant.

So to reiterate... i use both, but the bike is primary.

I just read something over this not to long ago.

And at the same heart rate, the treadmill burned like 2 more cals than the bike.

It comes down to pretty much a preference choice. And just getting in your target heart rate range.

I like to do the bike and walk a little. The bike is easier on my body I feel. Just a matter of preference.
