Sharp "pinching" feeling in upper back when doing shrugs

After about one or two reps of any exercise that targets the traps, it feels like a nerve is getting squished or pinched in the top right part of my back, near my shoulder and neck. By the time I use a low enough weight to where the feeling doesn't happen, it's not much of a workout.

It also happens after running for anywhere from 10-30 minutes. I know it happens with one or two other things but I can't remember them right now.

I should also note, the pain has been around since 8th grade, when I was running laps in the gym, and it felt like a nerve bursted or something at the very spot it hurts now. I had to go home and lay on the couch without turning over or moving for about 4 hours. I'm 21 now.

    Also....I don't have health insurance...

    Anyone experience this before?

I experience the same thing when I do shrugs or upright rows.

I have spoken to my Osteopath about it. He seems to think its one of the muscles deep in the upper back, beneath the traps (cant remember which). If I put my arms out infront of me, lock my fingers together and pull outwards then I can replicate the pinch.

It dosnt seem to be an issue for me as its only when my shoulders raise to a certian height so it doesnt effect my deads or other lifts. I work around it by training my traps with different exercises (which I feel are beter the shrugs)

Modified Face Pulls and Hang Cleans mostly. The face pulls are like whats demo'd in this youtube video:

    Face Pulls

    Hang Cleans

I use a longer rope though and really emphasise on pulling out/pausing at the end (near your face). Works best with 12-20 reps and not heavy.

I have something similar when my back gets tight around my shoulder blade. I can feel it when doing shrugs and upright rows. I can usually get it to go away if I can get the fiancee to massage the knot out from the edge of the shoulder blade.

When it pinches, I can feel it from my shoulder all the way to my neck.

Sounds pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. I would seriously try and find someone who can give you a massage and see if they can work all around your shoulderblades and try to dig in underneath it. It hurts like hell when they are on the "trouble spot" but does make a difference IMO.

This isn't guaranteed to work obviously, but it would be a good place to start.
