Thread: Injury?

    Unhappy Injury?

    At the gym the other day and I was in the middle of a set and I heard this guy start yelling. He was squating on a Smith machine w/ alot of weight (no stoppers in place) and he got pinned down with his head so far between his legs he could have blew himself..Anyway, I ran over and grabed the one side of the bar and jerked it up, and when doing so I "think" I pulled something in my shoulder. It's not really really sore but I got this tingling feeling in it. My question is: Would you know if your shoulder was seriously injured? I know this might sound like a stupid question but I never had this tingling feeling before, and I have pulled muscles in the past so I know what a pull feels like. Have any of you ever had this tingling feeling in a muscle before?

    Could be a pinched nerve, but don't take my word for it, get it looked at. By a GP or better yet a Dr. Sports Medicine. One of my best friends hurt his shoulder after being tackled in a football game. His regular Dr. told him it was a strain, but after a few days it was still extremely sore and uncomfortable. He went to see a specialist and it turns out that his shoulder was seperated and required surgery. Try to get two opinions....just DO NOT ignore it or you could end up taking a long time off of lifting.

    Yeah your right. I'm just gonna go to the Dr. It's not the feeling of a pull so it must be sumthin...

    Never jerk weight ..... Under those circumstances it may have been needed .... hope you bith r OK .....

    in the meantime rest it and don't press anything heavy. do rehab style lfitng, light lateral raises, etc

    Hurt shoulder

    The guy's have told you some good advice.
    Before I would go to the doctor though, I would really evaluate the pain. I tend to wait a couple of days to see if it presist. If it does, diffently go see the doc. In the mean time do little or no lifting. And I would agree with Pete on seeing a specialist. These things if gone unchecked can really lead to something serious.

    Well I went to the Dr. on campus tonight. They took X-rays and everything looked ok. But he said that it might be spasm; he went on to explain something about fast twitch muscle spasm's that can occur in situations like that.
    I'm gonna do what Dane said and lift very light on it and hope for the best. If not I'll go to a specialist.....

    Pete is dead on!

    Better safe than sorry. Don't go to your GP unless you need a referal for insurance reasons. Go to a reputable Orthopedic who specializes in shoulders

    You may need a second, third or even more opinions. Hopefully it's nothing severe.

    Rest if for a few days, Ice it several times a day, and take ibuprofin (4 to 8, 4 or more times a day). 4 advil or ibu are equal to one Motrin. This is likely what a Dr. would prescribe.

    A similar situation happend with one of my trainers. He was doing inclines on the smith bench with about 225. I was working with a client when I looked over at him and noticed the bar sittin on his chest and in between the hooks. (He couldn't go lower or push it up to hook it.) Anyway I ran over and upright rowed it off him...BIG MISTAKE. I slightly tore my Acromio-clavicular ligament. The bad think about this injury is that it can be a 1st degree strain or tear and not show up on an xray. My point is that if you have pain performing front raises, upright rows, heavy bench (there may be more exercises but these are the main ones that caused me pain) then layoff them and find alternative exercises that don't hurt. Ice your shoulder daily x2 and let it rest. It's taken over a year for my injury to heal because I did not stop may times when it began to hurt. You can't work through it!

    If your symptoms don't subside, and you have health insurance, go see a DR and get an MRI. They will take Xrays first. But as Dumbells said, the ligament won't show in an xray. Xrays don't show soft tissue. MRI's do. Better safe than sorry. If the doc won't send you for one, find one that will. It is better to know exactly what the problem is, so your can work around it allowing it to heal faster.

    Don't put heat on it. That is a common mistake people make. Pain is the result of inflamation. Ice it to reduce the inflamation. Besides, ice penetrates deeper than heat. I will also cause increased blood flow into the area to try and warm it back up. this aid healing. The only time I would not ice it, and would consider a brief heat compress would be immediately prior to a workout where it was involved. You don't want to work cold muscles.

    Tit: I have to go back for a checkup on Fri. But I did workout today lightly and it doesn't feel any worse. It actually feels pretty good. Maybe I got lucky like the Dr. said and it was just a spasm.
