gotta mix it up....i've never done the 10 sets thing for deadlift...done it for squat...kinda a once a month deal.
personally I pyramid something like
20, 15, 12, 8, 3, 1 with
135, 225, 315, 405, 495, 585

Use a belt, try quarter deads i love them and they get the job done.

Quarter dead are where you place the bar in a rack about knee high. That's as low as you go. Its a bit less traumatic to the back and gets the job done.

i find my back will get a little sore if my feet are too close together (inside shoulder width)
if your new to them just start out really light and focus on technique.

just like squats, make sure your knees don’t go in front of your toes. It should be a sitting motion.
I find when I am doing squats, deads or any back exercise, I keep my head up looking at the ceiling the entire time. It keeps your back straight and should help A LOT

Congrats for having the stones to do deadlifts. There is a lot of nancy's out there who don't wanna do deads for a variety of reasons, most often "injury" concerns. Done right, probably the best exercise for building mass, that and squats. Of course, there are large fellers out there who never do deads, but that's just not my style.

like rose rose said.... try rack pulls (or quarter deads as he called them)
most likey why your hurting yourself is bad form. or to much weight plus bad form.
go on youtubee and search rack pull/deadlift videos.
watch their form.

I only do rack pulls because I have a bad lower back and doing deads from the floor thickens your waist and hips anyways.
