    treadmill and h.r.question

    whats more beneficial :

12.0 incline @3.0 mph for 45 min holding onto the grips on the machine

    or

3.0 incline @ 3.3 mph for 45 min not holding onto the machine.

Either way you look at it I keep my hr between 115 and 122 bpm. I know that Ill be burning more calories during the 12.0 incline but Im looking to burn as much fat as possible. Any comments?

I actually wondered this, I see people at the gym at the steepest incline but holding on to the grips. I thought that by holding onto the grips they are really taking some of the challenge out of it by using their arms/grip to alleiviate some of the workload on the legs. But, would be interested in what an expert thinks.

whats up eat! I agree w/you 100%. Its like benching with the smith, lol. I wear a hr monitor cause I do not trust the grips on the tm. For me, because Im on my feet all day at work, I like the lower incline/speed because even after 12 hrs of work, I can still do my cardio. But whats more beneficial? I know it all boils down to hr but theres a significant difference of calories burned..

im good hope all is well too...i dont think it should make a huge difference unless you are holding on for your life... my opinion would be to not hold on and only the HR sensors to monitor your HR. other than that i wouldnt recommend it.

awesome! next week or the following week Ill be kicking up my cardio from 45 min to 60. So Id probably be better off doing it at the lower incline. Bottom line, as long as my hr is where it has to be, rock on!

    Good workout on those.

Since starting my bulk a couple 6 or so weeks ago the only cardio I do is a pick up basketball game 1x a week. I know that I should be doing more, but i'm still barley gaining (1lb/week) so I don't want to over do it.

were kinda in the same boat here. in order to get my hr in the fatburning zone and 0.0 incline, I would have to walk at like 4.5 mph which is freaking fast ( and I highly doubt I can even do this, especially for 45 min ). I need to keep my hr right around 117 to be exactly 65% so if whether Im at a 12 deg. inc at 3.0 mph or 3.0inc at 3.3 mph my hr stays around the same. Now if I go with a 12.0 I need to hold onto the machine, 3.0 I do not. So lets say the Im getting help by holding on, ya know what I mean? Im going to roll this way for a while at the lower incline cause at work Im on my feet all day.

sorry that I did not answer this. The caloric diff is huge. I cannot remember exactly but I believe that doing the 12.0 inc burned aroud 500 cals ( maybe a bit more, depending on the machine ) and the 3.0 was around 300. for 45 min..

Im not too sure how accurate those machines are so dont quote me 100% on this. Youll have to try it out yourself. Give it a shot at a higher incline. Mine goes all the way up to 15.0 deg. Just have to find where your hr has to be.

Now take this into consideration. Im on my feet for 8-12 hrs/day running aroud a hotel for work. Its way too much for me to do cardio at such a high incline for 45 min for 5 days/week. thats why I had to re-configure my cardio routine. Now if you sit at a desk all day, thats a different story.

hmmm very similar state then, im on my feet all day also, running around, heavy lifting, so i probs wouldnt be able to go all out on it, but will have to add an incline ...ill look into the difference to see if its worth it...but thanks for the info.

Holding onto the railings takes away from the benefit of the incline. Stairmaster kicks but!
