Need help on squat and deadlift problem

I am wondering if I am holding my neck or back wrong and it is causing my throat to hurt when I jump up in weight.

It happened once on DL's and I had a sore throat for a day or so, then the next time I did DL's I was fine.

Now today I jumped up in wieght on squat and it is the same pain, kinda like strained muscles running up and down beside my trachea.

I am wondering if this is comman, and I just need to adjust my head position, or something simple. I workout at home, so I dont really have anyone to point out the little things.

How much weight are you trying to do? What kind of depth are you getting on your squats? It's going to be difficult to tell what your problem is without actually seeing you doing these exercises, anyway you can get a video of you doing them?

I can't think of a form problem that would cause your throat to hurt, though.

Also, try using a squat machine to see if the same thing happens.

I can see how that could happen when someone strains excessively. But I have never heard of it.

I'm doing ATG squats with ~365 (20lbs heavier than last week), i know it is not a lot of weight, but I just recently switched from doing parallel squats to doing ATG ones.

The deadlift that did it was at 445 (a 10lbs increase from the week before), but the following week I went up another 10lbs and did not get the same strain.

No real way to video them atm.

Thanks for those vid links DSM, definitely helpful.

Upon watching the squat video, I think I have been angling my neck up too much during the lower part of the movement, so basically stretching the heck outa my front neck while straining to get the weight up. Atleast that is how it seems to me.

thanks again for those links, I am going to watch every video that guy has

Never been a huge fan of the "looking up" method during squats. Always preferred more of a head neutral position.

Resting the bar a little lower on your traps might help. I agree with Fireguy, neutral position with eyes fixed on something higher up.

The flat muscle that bends the head as in nodding, called the sterno chlido mastoid can be strained during these movements as well. Just be cognizent of the fact the it can get sore and there not be anything wrong with your technique. DL sometimes when at the top of the movement you

Oh, so my form could be fine and I'd still strain it? :/

Guessing I'm just jumping up in weight too fast (and possible partial bad form)
