I've hard a lot of guys preach this, the whole flat soled shoe deal. And I have a pair of chucks myself, but if I happen to have on my Under Armors of whatever I really dont notice much of a difference. But maybe guys who squat super wide would

I use my magnum tactical boots for squatting and it feels good. Any boot or shoe that has a flat hard sole is fine. A raised heel will help you more if your calves or hamstrings aren't that flexible. It helps a bit now, nothing dramatic but it makes a difference. The boot tied tight will support your ankles if when you are using a very heavy weight your ankle moves to the side or something which can prevent an injury but it's all a matter of preference really. Try out different shoes and see. I sometimes just use my ordinary work shoes. I look like a spa in them but I don't care. They're leather, flat, hard sole. Different for deadlifts though. You're better off with a very flat shoe like the chucks or similar with no heel. You want to be as close to the ground as possible but still have a grip so your feet don't spread out when you're doing a sumo stance. If you're on a rubber mat then ok that's not going to happen but you could be on a carpet surface or something.

Hey man, if you are still looking for a pair of great shoes for squats and deadlift... here is my suggestion:

Adidas Adistar Ironworks weight lifting shoes. There is a Ironworks II series out as well.

They can be a little pricey - $180-200, but what a great shoes they are. They will give you an amazing support and stability not to mention that they will last for a very long time if you take care of them.

All depends on how your squat and what your goals are. Oly shoes are great if you are a high bar squatter. Chucks are great is you have a powerlifting style squat. Barefoot and as well as cross trainers are good if you don't squat heavy (heavy being relative). I squat barefoot on my warmups (up to 495) then I put the chucks on.
