    Question on my Personal Trainer.

    Hello All!

I have been pouring over all the info on this site and it has been wonderful. Unfortunetly I am now doubting the trainer I have had for 2 1/2 years.

Here is my quick question. My trainer has not changed my program in the years except to add one more day of weight training ( up to 3 Days now) All my exercises have not changed. For example...When I go in for legs day I know I will be doing the same lifting exercises.

Do your muscles stop responding after a while to the same things? Is this stalling my performance and muscle growth?

    Thanks for all your help

The simple answer is yes. May I ask where in Ohio I used to work at a gym there?

You need to mix things up in order to break through plateaus and to keep yourself motivated. You don't need to change every exercise. Keep your compound lifts and change up your small shaping lifts. There are tons to choose from.

I am near Youngstown. What about you?

I guess I really need to move on. He seems pretty set in his ways. What I ask him to shake it up a bit he is really resistant to do so. So far this week I have been following his routine and Going to my other gym and doing additional different lifts. I am finally feeling sore in my muscles. It has been a long time since I felt that.

After 2 years with a trainer you should know enough to go out on your own.

I wish it was that easy. He ran his training kind of weird. He set the weights, told me what to do and I did it, no other info then that. I totally agree though. I'm making strides this week. I am working with the owner of another gym and he is actually teaching me how to do what I need to do, not just telling me. I really want to go out on my own.

Just listen to your body. Research different routines depending on your goals. Set short term goals to stay motivated.

Thank you. My motivation is at an all time high right now. Your right about the short term goals, sometimes I want it all at once. Really need to step out of my box. After doing the same thing for so long it just becomes a routine. I need a challange.

I lived in Columbus while I went to undergrad and worked there. Good luck on your new found confidence and goals. Just remember change is a good thing in a routine and some people benefit from more than others. I for example never do the same workout from week to week something is ALWAYS different whether it be exercises, set, reps, etc.

Unless you're a professional athlete you are wasting money with a trainer. There really is NO reason the average person needs a trainer, beyond that, the majority of trainers are nothing more than salesmen. I used to be one. There really is nothing most trainers will tell you that you can't figure out on your own. In my life I've met 2 trainers I'd ever trust to take advice from, the rest are just worried about selling. When asked up front they will admit to this, provided they have some sort of integrity.

    I agree with NOOOOMOTO
You can do it on your own. If you got the money to burn, just get another trainer

Yeah my dad has a trainer that he goes to once a week I tell him he is just pissing his money away but he doesn't seem to mind.

It is good to change up the secondary exercises some that's for sure that way your body doesn't fully adapt to the workout and you stop making progress which is pretty much what everyone else has said. Shocking the body every 3 months or so is never a bad thing so people even switch it up from week to even if it's just using dumbbells instead or a barbell.

Good stuff. Thanks to all. I just got back from the gym and had a killer ab workout. I was a little lost on some things but the guys there had no trouble helping me. I need to stop being so shy there and not be afraid to ask for help. I've spent 75 dollars a week for the last 2 1/2 years. Your all right. I could have ha a massive home gym by now. I needed the motivation for a while but what your saying makes sense. I've got the life style now. I hope to get the courage to post before and after pics soon.

Although I don't agree with most of the posts about personal trainers, since I am one, I do agree this is an accurate assessment of most "gym employees" who somehow are called pt's. I would be more than happy to give you some sample programs, at no cost, so that removes the salesman option, right here on this board and help you dial in whichever you pick. If you find a knowledgable, professional trainer, with integrity, then you will be able to acheive goals that you could never acheive alone. No body makes it to the highest level of their ability without a coach to help bring out the best.

My ultimate goal with PT clients is for them to be independent in thier workouts and get them to where they evolve thier own workouts and drop thier sessions to once or twice a month for just evaluation and planning. Its not an approach many take. If you're trainer hasn't changed up your workout you're basically paying someone to count your reps and tell you "lets go", "way to work" "you're doing good" If you're self motivated you should absolutley go out on your own, there are so many resources out there for people who want to learn including this board. And i always like to see another BUCKEYE succeed Good luck to you

No starry, I'm in Cincinnati so Youngstown would be a hell of a drive for me, But myself, tbody or baseline are online a lot and we're always willing to help out with training or diet

Yes ma'am. I absolutely train my clients to "go it alone", spend alot of time with them up front and wean them off, then only come back every two months to watch their routines, make sure they haven't learned bad habits, and make suggestions to change the program up, but I don't work for the gym, and there are only so many people a person can work with at any one time. I love what weight training has done for me and just want to spread the good news to as many as possible to improve their lives as well.
