Let the New Year Rush Begin!

Now that the New Year began, I'm sure you're aware that the gym gets busy... Do you feel more motivated to go to the gym when the New Years resolution people come to workout or do you feel more discouraged?

I actually get p*ssed off. Good for people starting the new year with intent to better themselves but its the lack of gym etiquette i loose interest in going. Taking all the weights....reading on a bench (which I've freaked out on a person for doing before). Things like that. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Motivated. I like scaring the new ppl with my grunting and weight dropping. Haha.

New people coming to the gym don't really motivate me, but they do give me more hope for where our society is heading. More healthy people = more happy people = better world. But yeah as a practical matter more people on the equipment and the lack of etiquette can get a little annoying... I try to lead by example, re-racking weights, wiping down benches, etc. The good news is that the people who are serious pick up the rules pretty quick, and the ones who don't get it don't tend to stick around.

i hear ya, the amount of twats ive seen already, cluelessly 'swinging' on machines while im waiting on them, and the manitory six 18yr old kids hogging the multi cable machines and doing 50reps each. i think i'll hold off on my tren for a month or a major temper tantrum will prevail lol

My gym was busy last night. Probably double the normal amount of people. It did make me happy to see some new young people in there, but there is nothing more frustrating than watching three 18 year old girls doing everything incorrectly and seemingly picking what exercises to do via some new "wandering around" technique that I am unfamiliar with. I wish they would do a session or two with one of the trainers so they would feel comfortable enough to stick with it.

I wanted to help, but instead chose to refuse to look at them...because my wife goes to the gym with me.

Luckily the gym I go to is huge. The place is busier but mainly the cardio and hammerstrength machines that I never use anyway. Plus I've got my routine setup so that i usually work opposite body parts then the average newcomer doing the chest, back, legs, shoulders, arms routine.

Give it another month and they'll all give up and leave because they don't look like a super model already. Since we all know all you have to do to be in shape is show up and slowly crawl on the treadmill for 15 minutes at it's lowest speed before leaving and visiting the mcdonalds and Starbucks across the street.

Ha! You brought up a good point... When you see a newbie doing something improper (ie bad form, poor lifting techniques), do you speak up or just let them be?

I usually don't....bad form...I just watch them. If its form that could injure...I usually point out to a trainer to correct. Seems less threatening

Ha, that's a good suggestion! Gym egos can be atrocious!

I agree 100% that upon joining a gym they should get several free or at least deeply discounted sessions with a trainer should they want to take advantage of the opportunity. At least a quick rundown of important gym et and procedure. I think the majority fail because they really dont have any idea how to reach their goals, get discouraged and quit

I adjust my workout time a little. I dont like to be in a crowded gym is such a pain in the ass. I have a really flexible schedule so its no prob for me to change things around. All tho i do find it comical watching people just yanking on weights and trying to show there buddy that they can lift more then him while twisting and pulling all the wrong ways. Normally only takes about a month or two for the newbies to fall out of the gym.

I didnt read through all the replies for me its a mix of emotions.

The new years people come in and fair play to them for wanting to better themselves, but jesus get out of my way please, your pointlessly swinging dumbells around and taking up space for stupid exercises and also talking a lot to their friend during sets.....which slows me down, really annoying.

I do like being bogger than them though, them being there makes me look bigger and feel better

Squat rack curls and half range squats can be a bit annoying but the abundance of single women rather than old smelly men does make the whole experience more enjoyable.

It's nice sometimes cause it forces me to think outside the box on my lifting... try exercises I never have or usually don't. However, fighting for dumbbells with noobs who have no clue what they're doing can be quite frusterating!! I've had to change the time I go to the gym as well. 11am seems to be the least busiest for me. I work funky hours so this is possible.

I agree with the above post, it makes for happier people and a happier life... but it sure interrupts the 'regulars' daily routine.
