I use the smith machine only because I can more easily change the "emphasis" .... (more shoulder, or more back)
how do u do more back on a smith machine for shoulders?
you are talking about a standing smith machine right ? (you can do squats on them correct ?)
if so, then I do military presses on this machine .... take your normal stance (which targets the shoulders more) and then move forward just a little bit .... on the down motion, squeeze your shoulder blades together ( a la lat pulldown ) and tell me if you feel a difference .... I sure as hell do
ohh i get ya, but for the smith machine , im talkin about sitten on a seat then doing the movement
I do them free weight with barbell standing.
But I prefer dumbbell presses over military presses.
friend of mine does it like that as well ..... he just sits backwards in the seat (chest against back support) if he wants to do the lil trick ...Originally posted by jurewix

I do it like this: For 2 weeks I use dumbells, then the 3rd week I use the bar (free weight). 4th & 5 week dumbells, then I use the smith on the 6th. Repeat.
I do standing over head barbell pressesI feel this works best for me.
I rotate, 1 week smith machine, 1 week dumbells, both are seated lifts.
i only do versions of dumbbell presses....again, one of the downfalls of my gym...."barbell, what barbell?"
Standing press is bad for your back in my experence. I would stick to seated military press in front and behind the back. I would also incorporate the Arnold Press, which is a dumbell press with a twist at the bottom preformed while seated.
