    Working out without a spotter

    Hi guys,

I have always worked out with free-weights and as an ex-competitive athlete I always worked out with guys from my team. I have just moved and its off-season so i haven't connected with any of my future teammates and am currently working out alone.

Right now I am afraid to work out right to muscle failure as I dont have a spotter... this is especially a problem for bench presses/military presses etc. I have always been told to use free weights over machines--but not really sure why.

    I have two questions:
What is the difference of switching to machines?
Has anyone run into a similar situation... if so what did you do?

    Thanks

I am in the same place as you. Lost my partner when I went to rotating shifts at work. I use machines now except for bench and squats, then I use the smith machine.
Some benefits from machines is you do not need a spotter and there is less chance of injury. Here is an article that may make you feel better about machines.

I use to be in the same boat as you, many people at the gym have the same problem, I just try to ask people and be friendly and most don't mind to help out for a set or two. Next time you might even be the one spotting him/her.

If you have a power rack with pins you can set up a bench in there and just put the pins a little bit below where you touch. This way if you fail you won't die. As far as military press, if you fail you just can't extend the bar upwards. Just bring it down and let it hit your thighs, no big deal. For squats just make sure that you have the safety pins in place.

If you don't have a power rack with pins, I'm sorry.

Why can't you just ask someone in the gym to give you a spot when your ready?? I workout alone and always ask people

I usually workout with friends, but sometimes I enjoy training by myself. Hat pulled down load, earphones in, stay in the zone! If you really need a spot tho, dont hesitate to ask someone. I personally dont mind spotting people when they ask me.
