i usually only do them once a week with my leg routine. i will do 3 sets of seated calf raises and 3 sets of standing calf raises. if it is a major weak point u could throw exercises in more than just once a week.

it depends, if ur a beginner (under 6 months training) i would say never work them. u dont need to worry about small muscle groups like claves and forearms when ur a beginners. i work them twice a week with legs. the key to calves is high reps, ur standard 6-8 reps, 3 sets are no good for calves. i do 2 sets of 15 reps on leg press, hold for 5 seconds at bottom and top and squeeze them as hard a su can. u seriously feel it afterwards. seated calf press is good either but my gym doesnt have 1 so i gotta improvise.

The Key component in full hitting the calf muscles is pause 2 seconds on the top and bottom movement. Aim for 20 reps with slow and consistent movement.

Being as they're a fast twitch muscle they respond better the high weight low reps. Doing high reps lower weights is no different then walking, they already do that all day. The calves are the hardest muscle to stimulate growth in being as they're so very dense.
