Machine Leg Pres VS the old fashion Leg press? -- is there any difference?

which one is better? Does it make a difference? because i know people always say "stay away from the machines even tho they are fun" etc. I like the Machine leg press alot. Its so much easier than loading a bunch of plates on it etc. And for drop sets, i can change it quickly. its really nice. I really dont see much of a difference. I was thinking of sticking with the machine leg press instead of loading the plates on an old fashion leg press.

Heres a pic of the machine leg press at my Gold's gym.

this one is random pic from google, just to get the idea. same thing as my gym's leg press equipment.

    Old school as everyone said

Stack it up go deep and go to failure

And you can do more quad building than a back squat

    Old leg press for sure...

The newish 'old type' leg press by hammer strength is amazing

This is the one we now have and I really like it... We used to have the really old cybex leg press which was my favourite but they got rid of it...

Have you ever tried Front Squats, takes all the pressure off of your back- try them, you might be surprised.

And yeah, Old School for sure.

front squats take significantly more core and back strength to do than back squats.

I actually prefer the New one at my gym. The old school one there really hurts my lower back. When im training back home, we do use an old school one, that doesnt hurt my back. It has something to do with the angle I would guess.

Then strengthn your core muscles and start streatching. Squats are much supeior to leg presses and helps much more with overall body strength and function. Those reasons you cant squat are just obsticles you need to overcome esspecially to avoid future injury. Lack of flexibilty (r.o.m)and core strength are the leading causes for injury

Everybody should be able to squat unless serious knee problems are occuring. Alot of people just ego lift and wont lighten the load and learn how to use proper form with proper stabilization.

You know I don't see much difference between the "old school" and the newer machines. The only limitation I see is the amount of weight you can put on an older sled is more. It isn't like you are using any accessory muscles with either type. The movement is nearly identical. I don't think it matters. I do squats on one day and leg presses two days later.

There is a difference in the force application because of the 45 degree angle with the old school and the cable/pulley/cam system of the new style. The 45 degree angle is why for the most part you can lift more weight on the old school system. It’s basic physic. Load *(sin45) = actual weight lifted. So its really only about 70% of the weight loaded.

If you are lifting to failure on both, what does it matter? So what if you have 300lbs on one machine and 200lbs on the other. If the amount of effort is the same, what would it matter? At my gym there are a couple different pull down machines. On one machine I have to put less weight on because for some reason it is more difficult to move. But I know how much weight to change to so the end result still ends up being 3 sets of 12 reps. Just because one requires me to put on more weight does not make it better.
