Without steriods you might find that you hit wall in terms of growth and strength sooner then if you were not doing heavy manual labor, but I'm sure you can still get gains with the right approach.

What you do need to make sure of is that you eat clean and lots of it regularly to cover all the cals you burn at work, may take some time to workout the cal needed, but best to be in the surplus. I would also only workout everyother day, so you give your body time to rest and grow. Also get lots of sleep

Before I got into the fitness industry I worked doing roofing. Burning tons of cals all day in the heat
It's tough but you have to make up for those expended cals with ur diet. Listen to ur body and don't overdue it. Obviously after a day of humping shingles up a 40ft ladder all day it's not a good time to do legs so plan ur workouts accordingly.

Did you cycle while roofing? If so did you notice you had a better recovery while on cycle ?

It would be fun to mention that Arnold and Franco used to be bricklayers...and while Arnold was in the military in Germany he would lift weights in addition to his training...

it would also be fun to mention that Arnold was probably juicing his brains out haha

I hear ya, the best part of my day is when im at the gym, and i go before work, so if im lazy at work, at least its not at the gym hehe! Im just worried about lifting stuff all day, then working out the next morning and overtraining those muscles, i will say that if one body part is really sore i will not work that out!! But that can really screw with my schedule !

in addition to the above, you probably need more rest than most.

When you say rest do you mean just sleep or does that include down time like relaxing at home aswell, some nights i can only get 6-7 hours of sleep (i have young kids) but after my workday i really try and relax on the couch fir a bit does that count??

Im in the exact same boat, my job consists of heavy manual labour for 8 - 10 hours a day
I split my workout weeks as such
    Week 1:
    Monday to friday

    Week 2:
    Wednesday to tuesday

The days inbetween friday and wednesday are strictly rest days, and every saturday and sunday are rest days
Since I've been doing this I've actually made alot of gains due to focusing on more rest

depending how demanding and what you exactly do at work it could be yes or no. Rest time for a muscle group should be at 72 hrs min imo. I usually aim for 5 full days. A week is best imo
