Chest and back on the same workout

    hey guys,
can someone explain to me if there's any difference if I'm doin two big muscle groups on the same workout or splitting them into two workouts?

and if I have the following scenario, in which I have only 3 days a week to do a workout and I want my workout to be intensive but I don't want to do
    a full body workout.
The questions are, is it right? is practical to split the workout this way?

If you can answer with some physiological evidence it'll be great

    Thanks in advance

Generally chest, back and legs each get their own workouts where at least 3 days are avalable. (Not including full body)

I can't imagine doing chest and back in the same day. I would not be good for three days after, plus I would be in the gym 2.5-3 hours to get that done.

I've done it due to work and time issues but I would not do it regularly. These are two big muscle groups that need their own training days to be hit efficiently.

If you only have 3 days to workout, try this

    Back, bis
    Rest
    Chest, shoulders, tris
    Rest
    Legs, abs
    Rest

I just went back to an upper/lower split so I work chest and back the same day, but the volume is not too overwhelming.

Practical is whether it works for you, fits in to your schedule, etc. Chest and back muscles are antagonistic to each other and training them in the same workout is more of an old school style but if it works, so be it. I train 3 days a week and split it as follows:

Monday: Chest, Bi's & Tris (I prefer Bi's after chest to allow the tri's a brief rest before hitting them)
    Wednesday: Total legs
Friday: Back & Shoulders. Doing shoulders after back I've eliminated shoulder problems.

I'm older but still train very heavy, intense and with a quick pace. All the above workouts can be done in an hour give or take.
