This friend is he doing 8 exercises with four sets per exercise for one muscle sounds like over training to me ie chest BB flat bench x 4 sets six to eight reps , incline x 4 sets six to eight reps , flys x 4 sets six to eight reps also there's declines you could do the same sets and reps , if you wanted the last set you could do a drop set , now this is a basic layout for the chest there's no way I would be doing 8 separate exercises on my chest our any other muscle

What's his diet like? All the lifting in the world may not get him to where he wants to be if he's put zero effort into his diet. Nutrition is far more important than his training if he isn't eating the right amount of marcos to promote and sustain goals.
