Is 3 days a week of training really enough??
hey all,
this is my first time on the forums and i have a couple questions. my new trainer for power lifting says i can only work out 3 days a week ,no more!! im going crazy and kinda skeptical. my goals are size and power i dont really need to be lean but im use to 6 days a week. The routine is primarilly big lifts ,focussing on bench, deadlift, and squats. im on my first cycle of test c. and eat as well and as much as i can. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated,,
LIFT BIG, THANKS GUYS!!Last edited by z.westelman; 08-07-2012 at 02:29 PM. Reason: typo

What up brah! Well power lifting is completely different than body building... so for body building 3 times a week is not enough in my eyes.. that amount would be to maintain.. takin it easy.. Now i don not know much about power lifting but what is the reason behind your trainer only wanting you to train 3 times a week? Yeah dead lifts and squats are big lifts for sure.. but what about your upper body.. i do not really understand the logic.. Overall you need rest to grow, but do power lifters need more days to rest in a week than train?... now im curious..

id do whatever your happy with,so 6 days a week would be fine, different trainers say different things, your current trainer says 3 days/week, you might get a new trainer and they'll tell you to train 7 days a week...
also at 21 years old, i think you'd be better off waiting a few more years before messing with AAS, but i doubt id be able to convince you to stop and hold off for that long (as is the case with many 18-25 year olds that come in here)
good luck westelman.

I would probably listen to your trainer. A lot of things I have read in terms of power lifting suggest 3 days a week. Places a lot of stress on your nervous system and you may find that if you try 6 days a week you will go 2 weeks forward and 1 week backwards. What is your routine?

IMO I'd look at ur trainer if he's big n it works for him then go for it, the proof is in the pudding

Honestly if you are doing a full body routine 3 times a week will be hard to recover from once you are lifting substantial weight. If you are doing more of an upper lower split, one training session is bench focused the other sqaut/DL focused then three times a week should be ample time to recover, and at most you would do four. Currently I do 3-4 training sessions per week, and I am hitting rep PRs max PRs PRs on every variation of the movements, I recently benched my old 1RM of 345 for 5 reps with ease. I had to chill on the cardio and circuit training and other types of stuff in order to focus on strength gains, body wasn't recovering well enough to do it all. So if your goal is to get really strong, which really will help you in the long run, then stick with this plan and see where it takes you. Powerlifitng routines aren't meant to make you really sore, might happen on occasion, but don't let those things be an indicator, instead look on if you are progressing on the lifts.

It's called overtraining. Working out too much will put you in a catabolic state. Not to mention getting hurt. Powerlifts are mostly compound lifts. Bodybuilding is much easier on your body and it's a lot of isolated movements. Powerlifting is a much tougher workout than bodybulding.

3 days a week is standard for a beginner powerlifter.

Yeah, with your type of training 3 days should be all you need and all you want. At least that's how i feel when i do those workouts.
