What's the best number of exercises to do per muscle?
I do ten workouts per muscle group. One muscle group per day. Six days per week. "Best" is a relative term and as our bodies are all different, you would have to figure out what works best for you. My general rule of thumb is that if i'm weaker the next week, I probably overtrained ;p
3 exercises per muscle group is enough.. if you are really hitting it hard you wont be able to move afterwards... for bis/tris/shoulders/ i do 3. then back/ chest/ 4.
I really want to hit my upper body hard with mass routines.
I believe it depends on the muscle group. But 10 routines per muscle group as some one above me menttioned is over training.
I say "depends on the muscle group" because i don't anyone that hits calves with three different routines.
^^^
As people have said it all depends on the muscle group...
Biceps perform a very basic function and you could get away with just one movement if you were to hit it with great intensity...
The back Is built up of many different muscle and one exercise may stimulate the whole back but will not hit each group with full intensity...
If you want to learn more look into geting a bio-mechanics book
its really dependent upon genetics, individual bodily response, and intensity. i agree the average person does not need 10 exercises per body part, but some pro bodybuilders have been known to just pound out countless exercises and reps for just one body part because they can. i have found that for the average starting lifter, larger muscle groups usually only need 4-6 exercises with 9-15 sets. smaller are 1-3 exercises with 3-6 sets. as you get more advanced you can tweak it and see what works best for you.
I'm thinking I may shoot for four or five. Every since I first started living I've never been a fan I working out my lower body, but it was naturally strong as hell. Would working out five days be to much for the upper body?
i have done 5 days just upper body before working my chest twice a week while my chest was severely lagging. i wouldnt suggest leaving legs out for that long however because you do run the risk of becoming out of proportion in the long term.
I don't want to leave them completely out but I want to focus more on my upper body
ok. well yea that is easily doable

Overtraining is a case by case thing really, everyone is different and everyone works out with different intensity, to say some one is doing too much or too little doesn't work, it's up to you to find a volume and intensity that suits you.
I want to start off my sets with a super set then reduce each rep by two on each set
Warm up set
1x15
4x10x8x6x4
So you get it now?
