What are your goals? Are you just trying to loose weight and tone up? Is your diet in check?

think big compound exercises, like squats, dead lifts, bench press, rows, pull ups, etc..
whole body workouts with a days break in between, eg. Monday Wednesday Friday
limit weights to about an hour each session + 30-60 minutes of cardio 3-5 days/week, walking/jogging/swimming/bike etc..
and try to eat healthy...

You know honestly the thing that really kicked my goals to the next level when I was in your shoes is befriending a couple of huge guys at the gym who let me train with them even though I was skinny and didn't know squat. they mentored me. I recommend you do the same thing of you can. Until them watch videos from pros so you learn proper form. Much more important than the amount of weight used. weight is relative. Remember too as you start down this road that the whole point is not the destination. Its all about the journey.

Like kronic said, 3 days week will be a good start. Do full body workouts if this will be first time in gym. Best bet is get on you tube or body building.com and check out videos of exercises and the proper way to perform them. Go easy at first, light weights so you can learn how to properly execute the exercise with good form. Number 1 thing, don't pay attention what everyone else in the gym is doing. You will get there and half them most likely doing exercises wrong anyway. Learn the proper way so you don't get injured. Don't worry about heavy weights, if you do it right you will get there. If just starting any exercise is going to help you grow. Start with one exercise per body part, do 3 sets reps will be 8-15. That will be a good starting point for a month or so then you can start adding more. Stick here there is a lot experience at this site, go slow it don't happen over night. Diet, diet , diet. 75% diet 25% gym. Good luck.
