    Excessive Shrug Weight

I noticed a guy at my old gym a while back shrugging 5 45 plates on each side, doing the reps kind of sporadic and not slow. Do any of you guys have to use this much weight for a good trap workout? Seems a little excessive to me, 315 for 4x8 done slowly and squeezing at the top is more then enough for me. Wonder if he was doing it just for attention...

Probably...I rarely do shrugs though, dead lifts are king for me.

LOL yea this is one of my favorite exercises to watch people do with bad form. They'll load up the plates then excessively use their legs or they'll move the weight an inch and a half if they are lucky

the one that pisses me off big time is the seated calf raise. blokes will load up multiple plates and instead of a controlled FROM contraction, they just bounce the knee brace with the plates making a helluva lot of racket. I really don't give a shit if they have bad form or not, but all that frikkin noise?

Pretty much the standard at my gym.

No kidding, I can hear the plates clanking from across the gym. Utterly annoying.

To make the matter worse-often those are the a-holes that don't re-rack their weights.

I'm constantly putting other peoples weights back. If someone didn't so it, the gym owner has to. There's cameras in my gym though. Members who repeatedly leave weights on the equipment lose their membership.

There should be a test and demonstration required for new members at hardcore gyms. Let the socialites work out at family fitness type commercial chains where they belong. I have keys to my gym so I can go any time of day or night - all of the members do. Luckily there aren't a lot of fvckwits there. Mostly hardcore lifters.

I feel like I wind up re racking a lot of weights to, Id like to see the moment they are done working out and just walk off leaving all the weights on the machine and slowly walk up to them and kick them in the ass. Pisses me off like crazy. Like the camera idea at your gym. Is it a golds or locally owned?

In my opinion, you don't really have to do shrugs. Obviously you can if you'd like but if you deadlift enough and you keep your upper back tight during the movement, your traps will be dead the next day anyway.

****ing hate having to put other peoples shit back. Walked in once place looked like it had been rooted for hidden cash or some shit.

But... since I don't have to pay for membership I don't kick up a fuss n happily use up left weights n then put em back;-)

Oh. N yeh. Shrug off on each dead lift rep ;-)

You want to talk about excessive shrug weight..I was at the gym tonight, I got asked to spot a guy shrugging the 130 lb dumbells. Now how in the Fvck do you spot someone doing shrugs. I didn't want to be rude so I just said sorry I'm in a hurry...Like WTF, want me to hold it while you take a piss too

Now that pisses me off. Leaving the bar, rack load machine with mega plates on. Who the Fk. When I was in my surgery recovery I went over to the load on shrug machine thing, Ha ..
and there's 5 plates on each side. My old partner from recently loads five on each side and uses his whole body, legs, calves etc....
Me and my present partner unload every plate and leave the tree in good order. ...crazy mike

How about the screamers? You hear some dude give out a monumental yell, turn to see what's up and he's benching 155 pounds or something like that. Drives me nuts.

Seems like we (my wife, son and I) are always cleaning up after other people at the gym. More calories burned and I just count it as part of the workout... lol.

Speaking of leaving weights laying around. Just today we noticed the worst culprits were the personal trainers! Go figure.

This is dead on. Shrugs are not a very effective workout anyway. Deadlift torches traps. The shrug is a body building move and should be done slowly and properly for good muscle contraction
