It takes time. Keep busting your ass and eventually you'll get there.

Start off doing lat pull downs if you have to so that you can increase your strength.

How long have you been training? If you just started then over time with training your back will come the strength to do chin-ups.

Do a variety of pulldowns, and if you gym has a chins support machine use this, and gradually take off more and more weight. Doing chins is a great way to increase upper body strenght and with to your back. And its also an exercise where when you first start doing it, you will improve rapidly.

You will love them when you get started. You can increase reps and sets pretty fast after you get to the point where you can start. I love how sore they make my lats. I started at two sets of 8. I was doing bent over barbell rows, seated rows, dumbell rows, and pulldowns for a few months before I even attempted wide grip pullups. Now I can almost do sets of 12 forever, maybe not forever but for a good 6-7 sets. Keep working you will get it.

everyone has to start somewhere! at my iron man comp last year i only did 6 it was pitifull but back in middle school i could do 14.. your body comp just changes overtime and dont get discouraged because how many pullups you can do doesnt determine how much of a man you are!
The one with a friend works well if you cross your legs (calf over calf) and he holds your feet so your legs are at a 90 degree angle. You can then push yourself up with legs also.

if you cant do one , pull up as far as you can and hold it as long as you can, I use to could only do one, now I do 4 sets or faliure at usually 7 to 4 reps by the end.

Definately do the Lat Pull downs. Heavy but to where you can make your 3 sets 8-10 reps I also did them behind the head. I used to do 2 first set now I can do 7-8.

    You can also do negatives.

have a training partner help you up, then hold and go slowly down again. Have him help you up again, and hold slowly down again.

When you can do 3 sets of 12 add resistance.
Do this by letting your training partner put his hand on you shoulders, and push you down while you try to resist it.
