Sharp pain in the trap on shrugs

When I've trained traps for the past year if I lift my head up with good posture I get a really sharp pain in my right trap if I go over 225 on shrugs... However I can lower my head kinda like bowing my head and lift as heavy as I want to with no issues... The pain is almost like a nerve pain like a sharp knife like pain... It's frustrating to say the least but I've figured out how to overcome this issue at least. Has anyone else had a similar issue on shrugs or can shead some light on what might cause this?

What you're describing sounds like a brachial plexus injury.

If it hurts don't do it. This should be the number one rule when training. You will actually get better contraction of the traps by bowing your head forward at the top. You are probably really stretching the area when holding your head up causing the pain. The last thing you want to do is any nerve damage.

Yeah I've figured out what I can and can't do... I guess its just one of those things that come with age :/

Try doing shrugs with the bar behind your back.... I've seen this help with shoulder injuries

I'm training shoulders today so I'll work that in my traps! Thanks for the input bro

Kept my head down and no trouble on shrugs... Went up to 315 for 12 reps not super heavy but heavier than I've went in a while!!!
