You always want to have some form of a rest period. You don't grow in the gym when you're working out. You grow when you hit the kitchen, stuff your face full of good food, and recuperate your strength and get ready for the next session. Now there is a substantial increase in recovery time as well as an increase in protein synthesis and protein turnover. Would it be wise to consistently train every single day while you are on cycle? I wouldn't think so because you may think your muscles have recovered, but the mainframe to everything is your neurological system. If the CNS doesn't have sufficient recovery time then you can't effectively use your muscles.
It's all one big family when it comes to growth and you can't piss off one family member and hope that everything will run smoothly.

As stated you need you rest and that you grow outside of the gym however it is important to make sure that you are training as intensely as possible and to not fall into a comfort zone that you aren't giving it 100%.
