It sounds to me like a question of proper form. The only way I can see of physically bruising the lat while doing a bench press is if your elbows are close to your body and not out to the sides. Sometimes in our haste to push more weight, we sacrifice proper form. The only other thing I can think of is if you're bench is too narrow, too hard, or possably too wide.
