    Alcohol compared to Rec drugs

This post is in response to a post in the news forum about some dude getting busted selling roids. The issue came up there but I'm not gonna steal someones thunder.

Alcohol is a drug period. Alcohol has an opiate like effect as a matter of fact like ether it was once used for surgeries. Alcohol is also classified as a depressant.

Going back to 1912. There was a chemical discovered that had opiate like traits to it that became intresting to the medical community called THIQ or Tehrahyrdqisoquiline. It was thought that it could replace Morphine as a painkiller on the battfield because it was much more powerful than Morphine. It was found that THIQ was in fact SO addictive it had no value in the medical community. In fact it was MORE addictive than Morphine. One study to proove this was where they bred some rats to detest alcohol. These rats would die of dehydration before drinking a 3% mixture of vodka in water. Once injected with pure THIQ these same rats that would die of dehydration of a 3% mixture of vodka in water would drink 100 proof vodka until they passed. Basically they turned into alcoholics instantly.

Fast forward to the 1970's (i think). A Russian Neurologist was finding deposites of THIQ in cadavers brains, this was also comfirmed in Texas by a Neurologist. Ironicially most of the cadavers they were working with were John Doe's from off the street that were wino's. Long story short a chemical process in the brain occurs during digestion that causes the brain to actually manufacture THIQ this horribly addictive stuff. I have to add that this "process" is still uncomfirmed they don't actually know how the THIQ gets there. The THEORY to cavieat off this is an explaination as to why some people can seemingly drink normally for years and then just go of the deep end drinking, the THIQ in thier brain has hit a threshold that has caused them to become physically addicted to alcohol or another opiate like drug (Many of the cadaviers were heronie addicts also).

So I guess unless your using strong opiate like as a rec drug than alcohol would be just as bad. Like I said some of this is THEORY. But as far as the research to addiction this is the most recent out there and this is not new news in the medical community. As a matter of fact it's old but the best we have so far. A lot of this I simply learned from Dr. Ohlms in College. On another note just about anthing can be addictive. i actually had a client who would get up in the middle of the night and drink a full pot of coffee before going back to bed. That was after 10 pots during the day and a triplebypass. I may not know very much about lifting yet but when it comes to addictions, I've been around the block a few times.

You can't name/discuss rec drugs here. You should edit them out (board rules).

I'm one person who believes very firmly that you can't generalize the results of a rat or mouse to an entire human population.
I'm sure we share a lot of the same mechanisms a mouse does, but lets not forget they're missing the part of their brain responsible for thoughts and critical thinking abilities.

So I would expect a rat to drink vodka till it died. Its a fvckn rat.

You ever seen someone lose thier house, job, family and money? I can't say it's exact but you wonder when you see it happen again and again. Unfortunately this is the closest they have gotten to understanding the disease on the biological level.

You should read this experiment from 1966. This thread reminded me of a behavioral psychology class I took in grad school a few years ago.

Good post musclescience. I didn't read all of it but yeah thats opening up a whole can of worms. They continued to do the same study with cocaine. I can't find the research on it but they turned up the voltage on the electric floor. It was freakin nuts what those monkeys would to get some.

No I absolutely agree. EVEN IF we are smarter then animals, noone (even myself) can say how any drug effects an organism in totality.

The fact is, having my own personal experiences with addiction, I would think addiction would bypass any sort of intellectual ability we have. Because you see both very smart and very dumb people getting hooked on drugs.

I more or less just hate research I think was my point. I've spent the last 3 months doing nothing but criticizing research so I dont intend to come in like a know it all. Addiction is powerful, I just wish we knew more about it then what we generalize from rats/mice/monkeys and the like.

id have to agree with bo on this one, looking at studies and rats, mice etc isnt the best method on recreational drugs and other addictive substances since they are stupid creatures

alot fo these animals are so stupid, if you were to give them an endless supply of food they would eat themselves to death

so their not the most reliable test subjects

This may sound cocky but I may be able to answer your questions. This is 8 years as a D&A Counselor talkin. I certainly don't know everything thats fer sure but I do know a fair share of experiences and psychology. I do agree though some psychology almost KILLS people with addictions because it tells them it is a learned response (like classical conditioning) so they spend most of thier drunken lives trying to "relearn" how to drink. I've seen it drive people to insanity. You have a good point. Research will NEVER solve the social part of the disease nor will it cure it. That's an inside job.

Some of you guys are So lucky..... I have had morphine a few times in pill form due to back surgery. It does NOTHING for me

I was taking 2 750 mg Vicodine, 1 morphine and 1 valium all at the same time due to SEVERE pain, it did not make me high, maybe a slight buzz but that's it.

I have taken Vicodine off and on for years, only dulls the pain, no euphoria. Percoset and Percodine dont do it for me either...

Be careful anything in the Benzodiazapine family is HIGHLY addictive and you can't quit cold turkey, you can actually have grand mal seizures or heart palpitations. You have to be slowly tapered off of them depending on how long you have taken then and you dosages. I've seen clients hit the floor and go into seizures out of the blue after taken that stuff. The psychatraic nurse on duty explained that it's not PHYSICALLY addictive but can cause your brain to actually "haywire". It gets your axon and axon terminals mixed with the wrong neurotranmitters in the brain.
