This post is in response to a post in the news forum about some dude getting busted selling roids. The issue came up there but I'm not gonna steal someones thunder.
Alcohol is a drug period. Alcohol has an opiate like effect as a matter of fact like ether it was once used for surgeries. Alcohol is also classified as a depressant.
Going back to 1912. There was a chemical discovered that had opiate like traits to it that became intresting to the medical community called THIQ or Tehrahyrdqisoquiline. It was thought that it could replace Morphine as a painkiller on the battfield because it was much more powerful than Morphine. It was found that THIQ was in fact SO addictive it had no value in the medical community. In fact it was MORE addictive than Morphine. One study to proove this was where they bred some rats to detest alcohol. These rats would die of dehydration before drinking a 3% mixture of vodka in water. Once injected with pure THIQ these same rats that would die of dehydration of a 3% mixture of vodka in water would drink 100 proof vodka until they passed. Basically they turned into alcoholics instantly.
Fast forward to the 1970's (i think). A Russian Neurologist was finding deposites of THIQ in cadavers brains, this was also comfirmed in Texas by a Neurologist. Ironicially most of the cadavers they were working with were John Doe's from off the street that were wino's. Long story short a chemical process in the brain occurs during digestion that causes the brain to actually manufacture THIQ this horribly addictive stuff. I have to add that this "process" is still uncomfirmed they don't actually know how the THIQ gets there. The THEORY to cavieat off this is an explaination as to why some people can seemingly drink normally for years and then just go of the deep end drinking, the THIQ in thier brain has hit a threshold that has caused them to become physically addicted to alcohol or another opiate like drug (Many of the cadaviers were heronie addicts also).
So I guess unless your using strong opiate like as a rec drug than alcohol would be just as bad. Like I said some of this is THEORY. But as far as the research to addiction this is the most recent out there and this is not new news in the medical community. As a matter of fact it's old but the best we have so far. A lot of this I simply learned from Dr. Ohlms in College. On another note just about anthing can be addictive. i actually had a client who would get up in the middle of the night and drink a full pot of coffee before going back to bed. That was after 10 pots during the day and a triplebypass. I may not know very much about lifting yet but when it comes to addictions, I've been around the block a few times.
