Why do people mount TV's over fireplaces?

I never understood this. And sometimes I see people that don't even have a fireplace mount TV's way up high. It seems abnormal to "Look Up" constantly. TV's should be mounted at eye level, way way down low. The center of the TV should be Eye level from your seated position.

    Is it just me?

I think they are mounted at that height for 1) convenience (over a fireplace), and that is where attention is directed and the room often designed to center toward and 2) to aesthetically match the height of paintings

I mounted mine at slightly above eye level when sitting to allow for a small electronic fireplace below and it looked very nice. I'm sure it still does in the ex-wife's new home...

that makes sense. One of the reasons I don't like fireplaces. It kind of forces you to setup your room a certain way.

Agree. Only slightly better than a velvet Elvis painting.

It is just you, but I happen to agree. I don't like it at all. A relative has one mounted like that and it's disturbingly annoying to me.

I'm looking at moving sometime next year and looking at a place now, the important thing is where the fireplace is located. I can't understand the people who put a tv same place as a tv or some kind of entertainment set, That's ridiclous/bad taste.

You want to separate that type of space...

So I have mine above the fireplace for 2 reasons. 1. I can put a small hd camera on the mantle and have the TV hide it to some extent, and 2. When I have a chic over for Netflix and chill, the fireplace lights the room enough so my camera can pick everything up...

We have ours right @ eye level in the den, but.... I have mentioned to the wife that I think the bedroom TV should be mounted on the ceiling?

    Tilt mount over fireplace!
    1. Interior design considerations - single focal point
    2. Don't watch much tv
    3. Hides the cam so when I have a guy over, the glow casts enough light....

Lot of weirdos out there. Lots of people hard up for sex to I guess. They just need to be prescribed 400mg of Deca and they will have no interest in sex at that point. Lol

I got both mine up on the wall they tilt up down or left or right so in the living room I can watch stuff in the kitchen..the one in my room is high mostly for space and style reasons it keeps the space below open for my exercise bike and my gamer chair ..I wake up every morning and sit at eye level up on my bike..laying in bed it's easier to see, lights up the whole far side of the wall with movie,I like it..

I don't like the TV above the fireplace myself. For one I don't like looking up to watch TV. I like mine about eye level while I'm sitting down.

All this time I was caught up in the kind of humor in the thread and forgot I don't even own a tv. I didn't buy a new one after my divorce a couple of years ago so haven't watched it in my apt since then. I don't have a fireplace, either, haha, so kind of like a newbie giving AAS advice, I had no business in the forum. However, I do have a flair for interior decorating (I can say that because I have a hot girl friend and am very secure with my masculinity)!
