Teenager with Gyno ( Pubertal Gyno )
My son has Gyno and is only 15 years old and is very concious of it. I took him to the doctor for blood work yesterday. So no results as of yet but the doctor mentioned his hormone levels could be out of whack or he may have just developed to much fatty tissue in the breast. Of course we will need to wait until the BW results come back, but he never mentioned any treatments. If you have any experience with this I would greatly appreciate your input. As it is a very big deal for him with appearance and summer coming on. Thanks!

This is a good link that discuss gyno.
Do I have Gynecomastia? If you're asking this question, read this thread.
Estrogen, Prolactin, Progesterone Management + Gynecomastia Prevention & Reversal
This link talks about the e2 test to get and potential treatments. Due to his age, I'm not sure if these treatments would apply but it will at least give you some talking points to bring up with the doctor!
I actually developed gyno at age 14 and still have a mild case to this day. The lower body fat I am, the less noticeable it has become. Good luck!Last edited by Bo58; 06-04-2015 at 09:27 AM.

About 75% of cases of pubertal gyno will resolve on their own within 1 to 2 years of onset. Sometimes Tamoxifen may be prescribed, usually at a dose of 10mg twice a day. Assuming his blood work comes back indicating normal growth and development then I personally would push for treatment being that he is already self-conscious about it. If it is painful for him all the more reason to seek treatment.

No they never sought treatment. I was fairly embarrassed at the time because I didn't know what it was so I made sure to hide it from my parents. Nolvadex is used for guys that develop gyno on cycle and that is effective at slowly reversing it. I would just talk to your dr about nolvadex or other options he thinks might work!

I'm going to ask about reversible meds when we going for blood work results. My son is very active in sports football basketball wrestling and track. So this puts a bit of a cramp in his so called swagger. The doc is checking estro, prolactin and test that I know for sure. I sure hope we can fix him up without surgery.

It is unlikely he will be prescribed anything unless you emphasize the psychological distress it is causing him.

Well he told the doctor yesterday that it is all he thinks about. He is always grabbing his shirt and pulling it away from his chest. He let the doctor know how bad it bothers him. Damn highschool kids can be cruel he is pretty big kid for just turning 15 6ft 190lbs. The doctor said to kick their ass. I told him he can only defend himself never to start a fight or throw first punch.

That's a good plan. Tight clothing can make gyno worse and also grabbing or pinching your nipples will also aggravate the issue. So it's best I must leave it alone (hard to do some times). I would push for meds if it's really bothering him.

This would be my absolute last resort. The OP said he would like to avoid surgery. That aside most of the time when insurance covers the surgery they use a general surgeon to perform the surgery as opposed to a cosmetic surgeon. Their job is to remove the mass that is causing pain and discomfort, not make your chest look all pretty. Many end up with scars down their nipples, indents in their chest, etc.
I would exhaust all non surgical options first.

Doctor called today and said his levels are all in good range. So I requested the blood work should get it at the front of the week.

You might want to look into DHT creams first or in conjunction with the Nolva. Of course see what the doctor recommends first and go see a specialist, not just a GP.
I would not worry to much about surgery, it's pretty minor and should leave no scar.
What would you say his body fat it? I know you said 6ft and 190 lbs but his BF still could be a little high. Maybe work on a good lean diet and get him to 10% or less. A lot of the time this will help get rid of it. Also I suggest doing about 100 pushups or more every day. Try to do at least 40 - 50 at a time

Lb I would say he is probably around 15-18bf. The doctor didn't say anything about trying to treat with nolva or dht creams he said he was going give us referral for surgery. I would like to avoid that if possible. I'm just not sure what to do if he won't prescribe and monitor bw. I'm can get nolva and I'm sure dht creams but not sure if that is really safe for him. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Nolva would still work even if labs are in normal range. However, at his age I have to stress making sure you are doing it under a doctor's supervision. Let the physician know that you want to exhaust non-surgical treatment options first. If the Dr. is not familiar with using Nolvadex for the treatment of gynecomastia I can provide you with a number of studies to show the doctor or i would advise seeking a second opinion from another physician.

I agree, if the doctor is not on board with trying other methods before surgery then it's time to find another doctor.
Yes blood work is needed especially at his age because both the DHT cream and nolva can effect libido and that's not to much fun at 15 although he might concentrate more on school work than other things. lol
Since he is 15-18% body fat I would consider diet first. Some people just carry fat in different areas and it's hard to get rid of. I think if you got him doing a lot more cardio along with a 500 calorie deficit and get him down to 10% he may loose all of the gyno and it may not come back. I would do this before anything else.

So I finally got bW back for the kid.
Total Test- 358 132-813
Estroidal 20.71 5.4-65.9
Prolactin 10.7 3.-15.0
I thought those numbers were kinda of wierd of course I'm no expert far from it. I thought his test levels were lower than I would have expected and prolactin wasn't out of range but more towards the high side. Any input I would greatly appreciate Thanks

To me the test level is super low for a 15 year old. Should be through the roof by the time he's in high school. How were his LH and FSH? Are you sure it's not pituitary problem. No matter what a doctor says he is not normal for 15 years old. I'm 27 and was at 304mg/ml which is technically in range and A ok. But my doc and I felt otherwise. I'm now on TRT. My doc said at 26 my test should be in the 7-800 range. As a teen I'd expect 1000-1200
