    Shin Splints!!!!!

How can you get rid of them? I know staying off is probably going to help but that is not an option ..Anyone have any suggestions??

    Depends how bad they are.

If you have only just started to notice them, cutting down your training could be all that is required.

If you have noticed them for a while but tried to run through them you will need to do a number of things. Some say heat, some say ice. I had them real bad and neither worked so I did a combination of heat before running then ice for 5 minutes immediately after the run followed by heat. Make sure you properly warm up and stretch both the soleus and gastroc.

If you still feel effects, you may have to lay off running for a few weeks and see a physio to get them rubbed out a couple of times. They will outline a proper rehab program for you which usually consist of water running followed by extremely light running on a soft surface and gradually building it up over a 3 month period. Unfortunately shin splints are an overuse injury so they will take a long time to heal.

In this post u dont say wot u think is cusing them or when they hurt so I dont know if my expierence will b of any help but here goes anyway.

I had them (or at other times calf/foot pain) from jogging on and off for a for arond 3 years. Tried many things and would even take many months off from jogging only 2 have them resurfice again (or the calf/foot pain)when I resumed running. What fixed it 4 me was seeing a podiatrist and getting sum custom shoe inserts made where they make a mold of ur foot (cost me around $500 Australian). I used them all the time and took a few more months off jogging and when I came back to jogging I was pain free 4 the 1st time in a long time. I continue 2 use the inserts all the time and been pain free 4 almost a year.

put a heating pad on them or go in a hot tub and masssage them...
I've had terrible shin splints and have trained through them till the point i couldnt walk and i dont recommend doing that...
Do you have flat feet? my problem was i had really flat feet and need arch support i got new insouls and that did the trick... another thing was i had really wide feet and i needed a shoe with alot more width

Formation runs gave me the worst shin splints! I would soak my lower leg (from the knee down) in warm water for 10-15 mins directly after running. This always helped me.

Hey, I just actually posted this in the other shin splints thread, but I'll repost it here too.
I used to get really bad shin splints when i played ball. What helped me was heel inserts in my shoes and cleats. The trainers used to ice our shins after every practice too.
Also, every calve workout i do, I also do 4-6 sets for my shins. You can do "toe curls" on a machine with weights. Find a lay down leg curl machine. Sit on it facing backwards with your legs straight and the top of your feet underneath the curl pad. Now just try to curl your toes back toward you. Do 15-10 reps each set. light weight. And you should have a good burn after each set. This is more of a preventative for shin splints though. Hope that helps

Stay off of the treadmill. Run outside in the dirt or on a track if possible. Eventually the muscles in your shins will adapt and strengthen and the pain really does stop. Persistance pays off. If you are running get fitted properly for shoes. Do not go to a big box store to buy your shoes. Go to a running specialty shop and have your stride and strike evaluated.

Try a local pharmacy first. They would be in the section with the foot powders athletes foot stuff. If not, go to a Dick's Sporting Goods or Sports Authority if you have one near you.

Just don't run for a week and an half and take it easy on your legs as in dont workout legs that week. It will cure the most part of the shin splints.

Maybe try taping your shinsplints if you can't take time off. Here is a video on youtube that shows how to properly tape up shinsplints to relieve pressure.

Note: go to the 6:25 mark in the video
