Every year there is always some doom and gloom prophecy fortelling the end of the world, it was going to happen in 2000, its going to happen 2012, but in 2029 we really could have a doomsday sceanario. The asteroid is expected to pass near us in 2029 and again in 2036. The asteroid is expected to pass within 30,000 km of us, that probably sounds quite far to most of you, but to give you an idea of how close that is, the moon is 380,000 km from us. Also the odds of it hitting us are 250,000 to one, sounds like pretty good odds, but considering that this is something that could wipe out 95% of life on earth, im still not too comfortable with those odds.
So what to do. Russia are apparantly making plans to think of ways to deflect it. Firing a nuke is NOT an idea. All you'll do is break it up into 2 or 3 smaller bits which simply increases the problem.
This is crazy because this is a very real possible end of the world sceanrio and one of the few natural events that can wipe out even the human race.
