HOW long do you wait PWO.

    Hey guys!

Do you EAT a meal or shake right after workout, or do you wait 1-2hour for for HGH release?

I ussualy have protein shake with glutamine and creatine and than 1-1,5hour later eat meal.

I'm old school so as soon as I'm done working out ill drink a shake in the way home. I know the research says wait but I been doing it do long and it works for me. Personally I think everyone is different. Do what works for you.

If it's been a hard session and I'm hungry, I drink it right away. If I'm not hungry, or it was real hard, and the last thing I want is to put something in my stomach - I wait about an hour.
But I'm no expert - I'm looking forward to others' answers.

Only if I'm hungry. I don't really have a set time to eat. Just whenever. Do you mean resting growth hormone?

Not sure buddy, I read that after lifting workout your GH production is pumped up and when you eat you stop it.

And to take advantage of that you shouldn't eat few hours after workout.

Well if it was good enough for Arnold, it's good enough for me. Lol. I personally think supplements(shakes) have their place. I have always used them. I also make my own, but I use a couple different ones.

Well, fasting secretes more GH, but I wouldn't worry about your post workout meal. If anything, focus on your resting GH and load up on L-Arginine before bed.

Studies concluded a minimum of 5 grams to stimulate rGH.

Now I got something else to worry about whether I'm doing it right or wrong. lol. I eat half a protein bar as soon as I climb in the truck after lifting. It's a short drive home, maybe 10 minutes, maybe, and then I make lunch. Probably not more than 30minutes pass between my last lift and when I start to eat. It's seems to be working so I guess I'll stick with it. Who would have thought there could be so many variables in something so seemingly simple as getting fit?

I have 0.3g/lb of LBM protein isolate 7mins and 24 seconds after my last rep. If I use hydrolysate I have that 11 mins and 16 seconds after my last rep.

Exactly 58 minutes later I eat a meal comprising 36.2g protein, 87.4g complex carbs and 12g fat (3.2g saturated).

Thanks Austinite - does it matter if you've eaten the last meal - or does it have to be on an empty stomach?

No it doesn't matter. But some folks are more comfortable taking Arginine on a full stomach. I take it empty.

I tend to have 15g BCAA's during training and cardio and then just eat when I get home.... I do tend to be hungry so have something fairly quickly when I'm back, usually pancakes yoghurt and blueberries.... Feeling that combo right now

Ha , yeah that would be sarcasm saving time.

Too much thought into little things and not enough thought into the bigger picture is the biggest worry that people should have.

There are numerous studies for an against whey pre and post workout and within what time slots and how much you should take and how many and what type Of carbs and their timing too. Above all, it all needs to fit your lifestyle and really doesn't that much on the long run.

Find out what fits you best. For me that is whey immediately post workout;40g) then a normal meal 60 mins later.

This study is a confirms the need for a PWO shake and what is should contain.

    Code:
When post-exercise hyperinsulinaemia is supported by hyperaminoacidaemia induced by protein hydrolysate and leucine ingestion, net protein deposition in muscle should occur. Thus, consumption of post-exercise recovery drinks containing these nutrients in conjunction with appropriate resistance training may lead to increased skeletal muscle hypertrophy and strength.
Hyperinsulinaemia, hyperaminoacidaemia and post-exercise muscle anabolism: the search for the optimal recovery drink -- Manninen 40 (11): 900 -- British Journal of Sports Medicine

^ that study does not actually confirm anything or offer timeframes. I've read it a while back but I'll skim through it again in case I missed something.

I should have been more clear, my apologies. Only talk about what to consume. A look through the references shows a few studies with our specific question in mind.

    Thanks

Such an old, tired debate. Sorry, I don't have the energy these days...

I eat when I'm hungry, which is usually always, so I tend to eat immediately PWO, but for that reason alone.

I mostly drink directly a whey shake 20-30g after my workout and when I get home I make sure I get a meal high in protein and carbs. So my actual PWO meal is like 0,5-1h after my workout.
