Dextrose = table sugar
There are two types. One will raise your blood sugar slowly and the other will spike it, like we want. The homebrew store should know the difference. Dexatrin(sp?) is the slow acting kind.
I was actually told once that I should use the slow acting kind. So I bought what I normally do, laughed and walked out.
Im buying it online. It doesnt say much about it. Its just a 50lb bag for 42 after shipping. Its a great deak I just want to make sure it the right stuff.
What do you need it for?????? PWO????....if its dextrose...then just use table sugar....just as effective and less expensive.Originally Posted by fanatic
Dextrose(aka glucose) is a monosaccharide or simple sugar that is about 20% less sweet compared to cane sugar. It is derived entirely form corn, & contains no fructose or lactose.
sorry but its not table sugar its corn sugar
...but for what he needs it for he can just use table sugar.Originally Posted by thejuiceisloose
So if I looked for corn sugar Id be ok? Is dex and corn sugar the same thing?Originally Posted by thejuiceisloose
Well I dont know what he is using it for. But I use it in my protein shake to get the proteins absorbed by the body quicker. If he's using it for something else, dunno about that

For an insulin spike PWO and for absorbtion.
Right....to create the insulin spike....table sugar will do the same.Originally Posted by thejuiceisloose
So then why does everyone say to use Dextrose? I am going for a 2:1 Carb/Protien ratio for PWO.
True but dextrose is higher glycemic and causes longer and higher insulin spikes than say fructose or sucrose. It's the highest glycemic natural sugar. You can use table sugar but why not use dextrose when it's so cheap?Originally Posted by 01dragonslayer

...because you can buy a 5lb bag of table sugar for a buck....and IMO its just as effective.Originally Posted by thejuiceisloose
everyone is entitled to their opinion, that's why we're chatting on a forum

Probaly the way to find out is to try both.
That's what I'm trying to say, I have tried both when I have run out of dextrose I use cane sugar. IMO and professional bodybuilder's opinion dextrose is better if you have it and/or can get it. I mean youre not going to die if you use cane sugar, but dextrose is more effective
ok... so dextrose and corn sugar are the same thing? Does everyone atleast agree on that? lol
yes!
We have a winner!!Originally Posted by fanatic

Lol Sweet! But can I just go by any corn sugar? How can I tell between the slow acting one and the one that causes an insulin spike?
Also, what is another name for maltodextrin? I guess I need half dextrose, half malto.
Maltodextrin is a sweet, easily digested carbohydrate made from cornstarch. The starch is cooked, and then acid and/or enzymes (a process similar to that used by the body to digest carbohydrates) are used to break the starch into smaller chains (3-20 chains in maltodextrin). These chains are composed of several dextrose molecules held together by very weak hydrogen bonds. Dextrose is labeled a simple carbohydrate and Maltodextrin complex. Corn sugar =dextrose
