    Exclamation A New Math Dilemma!!!

If you have ONLY $20.00 and you must buy with it 20 animals as a mix of the following three animals:
    sheep $4.00
    chicken $0.50
    bird $.25
you have to buy at least one of each kind and the number of the animals you have to buy has to be 20 and worth an even $20.00
so many of each kind will you have?

let x = number of sheep
    y = number of chickens
z = number of birds and
    solve the system of equations

    4x + 0.5y + 0.25 z = 20
    x + y + z = 20

you will get your answers in parametric form, but we must choose a parameter such that all x ,y ,z values are integers

    i will solve it later

you would need one more equation to solve. 3 variables = 3 equations

you can use a parameter for your z varaible

    assume z = t, some real number
    and go from there

chances are they isnt necessarily a unique solution

Like dude says... chances are it may not lead to a unique solution... but since a correct answer has already been posted it should.... but it will get very messy that way....

Is this really from a calculus course??? I already completed my calculus sequence about a 1 and a half to 2yrs ago (I cant remember because I dont attend college regularly anymore) but I dont remember this being part of calc 1... seems more of a pre calc class to me....

I guess if it needs to be solved using an alternate variable.. than it would be calc...

Goes to show... give urself a couple years and you forget everything you learned in school if you dont continue to attend regularly or graduate

So off the top of my head.... Solve for 'y' first...

    You get y = (56.25/3.5)t

Plug this back in for 'y' in the first equation and solve for 'x'.... 'x' will than equal "SOMENUMBER"t

U place both these values back in the first equation and solve for 't'... once you have the value for 't' you will easily be able to figure out the rest....

caddilac is right. you don't even need a formula to figure this out. my little bro could probably do it!

    3 sheep = $12
    15 chickens = $7.50
    2 birds = $.50
    TOTAL
    20 animals = $20

Ya, if he had Excel... I doubt a calc professor would except that has a correct solution, because in higher math classes like calc, its not about the answer, its about how you arrived at the answer

this isnt a calc question... its more of an elementary linear algebra question

Ya, im tryin to find some of my old books, but like I said... I thought it was more of a pre-calc class (linear algebra to most).... some schools are different though, so it may be incorporated in a first year calc course as the first chapter or two

Well it would be the answer, since he asked "so (how) many of each kind will you have?"

calculus was more about derivatives and integrals. this kind of problem is more like algebra, but it can be solved using matrices, which is linear algebra.
