Phil Mickelson had a one stroke lead going into the 18th hole and a simple well played par would give him victory and the $1,225,000 purse, and a bogey would send him to a sudden death playoff. So what did he do, he pulls out his driver which he hadn't hit well all day, only hitting two fairways. He hits a giant tent that saved him from loosing his ball. Then from the rediculous rough and behind trees he tries for a hero shot, when a punchout to the fairway is still a good shot at victory. He ends up hitting a tree and ends up back in the rough. To make a long story short he ended up double bogeying the hole and outright losing the tournament.
Geoff Ogilvy ended up winning the US Open with a score of +5, thanks to Phil totaly choking.
