You would lose muscle and gain fat I suppose, but it really depends on how your diet would be.

I can only assume that if you quit working out, then you will quit eating right too.

unless you are completely sedentary i dont think youll lose much muscle. you will lose strength certainly but i dont think you will just atrophy because you arent doing a normal workout routine. i think that people tend to gain weight when they stop working out simply because of poor doet. you on the other hand being a member of this board probably still eat relatively good while you were off. also once you stop working out your caloric needs will change. so instead of having that big PWO and PPWO high pro/carb meals that add up a ton of calories. you strip nearly 1000 cals from your diet and yea youll lose weight! of course this is just all my opinion and could be way off base.

biglou that sounds about right. and i realize im losing weight because i havnt been active from surgery and my appetite was quite small for a while.. but i was just thinking about it and i was always a smaller build and remmber back when i was younger that if i stopped drinking protein and even have a poor diet it would still lose weight rather then gaining it. im wondering if id rather of put on a few extra pounds being out of it to work on when i get back or if its better to start off slimmer..i want to be cut but i also want to be cut at 200lbs not 180..

if i did it because i quit... i woul dget fat.

if i did it because (like you) i couldn't get around... i would stick a diet and probably lose some fat or at least maintain what i had.

also dont discount the effect lifting has on your mental well being. i was out of the gym for a couple of monthes toward the end of last summer because i was lazy and studying for a professional exam. although my weight never fluctuated much (maybe 5 lbs up or down) i felt smaller. but when i took measurements they were right where they were supposed to be. Working out def makes me feel better all around. i think plato siad that a sound body fuels a sound mind...or something to that affect.

well, I know that I would lose muscle mass, I have taken a few months off here and there and my weight dropped a lot and I got smaller. I have a naturally very high metabolism.....which is a blessing and a CURSE...I was in wrestling and never had trouble cutting weight.....but always trouble putting on mass. But, like I said...I think because of such a HIGH metabolism my body would burn fat naturally and I think that would turn into catabolism....b/c I don't have much fat to begin with. But maybe with staying with a bulking diet, I might be able to maintain somewhat...that is something I did not try...

good for me that i have had very good muscle memory in the past. once in a great while i would take 2-3 weeks off after months of hard training. i would actually feel really good and get my pump back within days. lets just hope that it stays taht way with this extended time off. when i get back to the gym i will be back after about 3 months

bro, you'll be fine i'm sure. just eat as healthy as you can, and do anything you can to preserve that muscle. i have faith in ya, and since you don't want to lose anything you most likely won't because you have that attitude, so keep it up

people also underestimate the amount of water you hold too. you could have shed that?

I stopped working out for about 9 months actually and I just got back into it. I went from a high of 237 down to about 212. Right now I am sitting around 225.

I would gain weight like you wouldnt believe. If even for 3 weeks I stopped running 5 days a week and didnt eat as clean as I do, Id jump from 180 - to a disgusting 195 easy. I think of it like this, if I eat as clean as I do run and lift as hard as a do and incorporate one sushi dinner into this equation and the scale goes from 180 to 186 I dont even want to imagine what it would do if I wasnt lifting, running and dieting as hard as I do.

I've taken MONTHS on top of MONTHS off and I never loose a lb. I gain some fat, I look smaller....muscles are not as "full".

I pretty much keep what ever I put on. I graduated at 140lbs and put on 60lbs real fast after that. I've taken a year off and maintained 190-200lbs. I just don't look as big.

But for some reason too, if you saw me with my shirt on, then I took it off you would be disappointed. NOt because of a gut either, I just look really big in clothing.

I lose weight really fast. If I keep up a good diet it slows the process, but if I go back to living the lifestyle of the typical person, Ill drop maybe 3-5 lbs a week, easily.

    lose weight

if i dont maintain my diet i would rapidly lose weight... drop down to the 170s or lower and then probably gain some fat and then steady at 180

If I quit lifting, I would definately get skinny..no matter what I ate...although I may be a "soft" skinny kid if I ate a bunch of fast food. MY "equilibrium weight" is like probably 175-195lbs at 6'1"....

  21. #21
All depends on how you eat. You may get a bit smaller but there is no reason you should lose a significant amount of weight if your calories are around maintainance. I went overseas for 8wks before, did nothing but dips/pull-ups/push-ups/lunges and actually gained weight(8lbs)/strength while there. If you stimulate the muscles and keep the diet high in protein I see no reason why you would lose weight over a short amount of time.
I was also 40lbs lighter than I am now, so I think that also made a difference.

last time i had a break from training was when i had shoulder surgery in 2004. i went from about 170lbs down to 154lbs. within about 3 weeks of training again, and eating right, i went right back up to 182lbs. muscle memory rules! and also, i was training my delts directly, and able to do acouple of exercises that i hadnt done in over a year. if i was to stop training and eating the way i do now, id lose alot of muscle mass, and become much softer-looking, id likely go down to about 150-160lbs, from around 200lbs that im at now

it really depends why i quit. If i gave up fitness, i would surely turn into a blimp.

on the other hand, if i decided (which will never happen) to give up on the dream of being an elite sized and ripped bodybuilder so i could look ripped at 180 so i could bang more chicks, i would get totally ripped

I gained 10lbs my last cycle of sust250 over 10 weeks, eating and lifting regularly. Then in December I went on a 9 day drive up and down the west coast, eating only fast food/truck stop food and sitting in a car/hotel. I lost 5 lbs on that trip.

what will happen is you will lose muscle, which will in turn slow down your resting metabolic rate. however, if you have been swole for a long time (the longer the better) you will lose less muscle

Keeping a lot of muscle is extremely ineffecient for your body... and it wants to be as effecient as possible for survival - nothing asthetic/cosmetic about it's demands. To keep your gas-hungry Hummer, you need to keep using it or your body will trade in for a Volkswagon Rabbit at the first sign of a salesman The gas is expensive! lol

But muscle does not turn into fat. If you keep eating like you did when you were training for performance/muscle gains then the extra calories will be stored as fat. You have to eat for your current goals and activity level.

im commited as anyone on this board. thats why im still on this site even tho i have been out the gym for 2 months. when some of us say that we have been out of it for a while it doesnt mean we are lazy sometimes it happends from injury or family issues, or other important things..

IMO... going to the gym is basic hygiene... I make time for it like I make time for taking a shower... I have thought this way for over 10 years now...

If I take a break I gain a tummy because my beer intake goes through the roof but I don't lose muscle or strenght, however I lose local muscular endurance quickly.

I weighted in this morning at 253lbs and hoping to get down to 235lbs for Aug 25th. Even when dieting and doing alot of cardio (including Judo x3 weekly) my strenght remains very high.

In fact my strenght is my worse enemy. I enjoy lifting heavy weights, but years of it has played havoc on my body now.

I havent worked out for the past 2 weeks now due to work committments. I haven't been eating as much food and what I have been eating has been pretty crap. I've gone from 96kg to ~ 92kg and I am noticeably leaner.
