Doctor Confidentiality?

I am going to a new family physician...I'm on my mom's insurance b/c I am still in college (5th yr.).....she wants me to get a full check up which I belive will include a blood test....I know my numbers are gonna be all over......and I'm sure hes gonna ask me if I'm on steroids...do I tell him?..Also, is it the law to keep file information between me and him ONLY?

its always been thrown around insurance could be raised if u told them but seems like nobody ever knows for sure. to me it seems likely it could. compare it to auto insurance. if ur a bad driver and get alot of tickets, violations, etc... its riskier to insure u, therefore it will cost more. imo, seems like if doctor knows u are doing AS in which he knows it can adversely effect your health, he could list u as a higher risk then person who doesnt do them. maybe not directly tell insurance company but just classify u in a certain higher risk group. i think we need a doctor to confirm how it would work. like i said though this isnt sure, if i were u id tell him, u may get a lecture or something but at least he can now know certain health things to watch out for that he may not have considered before knowing ur running AS

i dont know...i suppose you could go either way..if youre not honest with the doc how can they properly help you? i suppose if its just a checkup then its ok not to tell but still....maybe you should just say you dont want a checkup and youre fine...

The doc cant tell your mom jack....your over 18. The doc can only release info if your an imminent danger to yourself or somone else, so even if you tell the doc he wont be able to discuss it with your mom unless you give full permission. Your under mom Ins. but the confidentality rules still apply.

Now if he asks or if their is a reason to tell him than ask him to "drop his pen" or deny it.

the reason for the chek up is basically I haven't been to the doc in about 4 inyears.....she is a head nurse in the E.R. and feels you should get a check up once a year...I think I'll just put it off until I'm off cycle....should I even wait until I'm done with PCT??

Check-ups are preventative actions, and thus don't include blood tests. So unless someone is specifically fishing for illicit substances, blood is only drawn as a responsive action when investigating a given condition or symptom.

You can always call the doctor's office and request check-up protocol. Then take the necessary measures, active or evasive.

..According to my family doc (who is also a friend of mine) HIPPA does allow certain information to be shared with the insurance company..This information is generally confined to the use of illicit drugs and mental health....

At your age he wont test your Test levels thats for sure, the only other possible elevation will be Cholesterol which again, he probably wont check because of your age and your liver values which may be eleveated but that can happen for all kinds of reasons.

well, I'm not exactly sure, I been told to get blood tests during, and after cycles neways tho, but I was just wondering about the whole insurance regulations and for security purposes.....

He tried giving a dissertation about steroids and how evil they are and when I tried discussing it with him you know most of the liver horror stories he was talking about were strictly dealing with 17AA orals he had no clue what I was talking about, so I got pissed and left, told him no matter how long he spoke he wasn't educated enough on this to lecture me. Problem is I still have a file out the with "Anabolic Steroid Use" written on it-I'd do just about anything to make that thing disappear. If I had it to do over again I would have told him that I had used some "supplements" and that's it-don't buy into the confidentiality B.S.-Very hard to prove he broke it

true.. there isnt much to worry about. dont tell him. they may come back and say they are concerned with your cholesterol. i have had that happen to me while having a checkup on cycle.

Even with another medical professional he needs your permission as I understand it. The real problem is, how do you prove he broke your confidentiality? Unless you record the guy talking to someone else or find your medical records outside his keeping it it is very tough to prove that he broke confidentiality. You just have to hope he is an upstanding guy, or only tell him what won't hurt you

I would not say anything personally. If a Doc asks just say cell tec or over the counter pro-hormones. Its not worth the risk. I get blood work done regulary and my doctor orders it for me. I telll her it is for personal reasons and I want to make sure everything is ok. She does not ask any questions. I have done this at least 4 times now. Last time she said my blood levels were concerning and I told her I have been taking alot of over the counter pills and I will slow down. I know all about the confidentiality laws and our rights but it is still concerning to me. This is just how I handle my situation.

..the reason I say certain info is shared with the insurance companies is that they make payment based on services rendered...As the payee, they have the right to question why a particular service was performed....even under HIPPA regs..

I agree with thunderdan, just tell your doc that you use over the counter pro-hormanes like 1-AD( that's what I am going to tell my doc when i go for check up because my numbers will be off for sure from my before cycle test and tell your doc you eat lots junk food too ), I have taken and heard lots of stories that pro-hormones are harsh for liver.. let us know how it goes...good luck
